  1. Modelling in CINEMA 4D - Start Here

New to modelling? These are the videos you should watch before watching any other modelling tutorials.

    Topics covered:
Spline modelling with spline primitives, using the Extrude object and Sweep object. Using a Splinemask object and nested Splinemask objects
Spline modelling by manually drawing splines. All the different spline types covered
Why spline modelled objects may initially be a good idea to start with but not so hot when you want to add detail later on
Off topic - why an object with an Align to spline expression tag slows down going around bends in the spline and how to fix it
Spline modelling - using the Lathe object. A chess pawn is modelled using a Bezier spline (same as the Pawn modelling tutorial we have now except updated)
Spline modelling - using a Loft object

Boolean modelling - what it's good for. Common problems. Example and why Boolean modelling is often a bad technique to use
Customizing your layout to suit modelling

Polygon modelling - Hard surface modelling. A mechanical part is modelled
Polygon modelling - Subdivision Surface modelling. The same mechanical part is modelled
Polygon modelling - Point to point modelling. Create polygon tool, Edge Extrudes etc
Polygon modelling - Organic modelling with Subdivision Surfaces. No a step by step tutorial but an extended walk through of a Sea Horse character and how it was modelled

Because of the length of the videos I have split the videos into 2 parts. The videos are hosted on Vimeo. Clicking on the download button will take you there. Suggest you download the high res video rather than watching the lower quality streaming version.

    Part 1 Splines - 1 hour 47 minutes
    Part 2 Polygon modelling - 1 hour 38 minutes
Scene files from the polygon modelling section 460kb

I've recorded these a bit more casual than normal. I make a few mistakes, forget how something works and say the occasional wrong thing. I don't think that this distracts from the tutorials as you'll see me have to figure things out before carrying on. Recorded using Release 15. About 90% of what I cover can be applied to earlier versions of C4D.

  2. Creating Round Holes & Extrusions

Here's an epic 65 minute tutorial where 3DKiwi demonstrates various methods of creating smooth round holes or smooth round extrusions on objects.
    Covered:
    Simple hole in 4 polygons
Why using Booleans isn't a good idea
Holes and extrusions by copying in a disc object. Hard surface version and Subdivision surface variations demonstrated. Shrinkwrap deformer required. At the end of the tutorial 3DKiwi briefly demonstrates creating holes and extrusions with the "Make a hole" script by Sandi Dolsak, Cylinder to Cylinder II plugin by Jurgen Meier and a Nurbs version using MoI 2 and then exported into Cinema 4D.
Note: Instead of deleting polygons and then doing a Boundary Loop selection to find out how many edges there are a quicker way is to select the Polygons then do a "Select Boundary Outline" command. Hotkeys U~Q
This tutorial is hosted on Vimeo. Clicking on the download link will take you there. You will be able to download the original high res version rather than watching the low quality streaming version. The Points to hole script is available to download. Just click on the download button and you'll have an option to download it and or the tutorial.

  3. Model a Technic Beam using the Bevel Tool

Here's a 44 minute video tutorial by 3DKiwi where he models a Technic L Beam using mainly the new Bevel tool in Release 15.
This tutorial is hosted on Vimeo. Clicking on the download link will take you there. You will be able to download the original high res version rather than watching the low quality streaming version. You can also download the final scene file.

  4. Dice Modelling

Here's a 1 hour 35 minute tutorial on how to model rounded style Dice using Subdivision surfaces. Although the tutorial is recorded using R16, users of earlier versions will be able to follow along as none of the newer modelling tools are used. At the end of the tutorial there's a short section on applying materials. Because of the changes to the material system in R16 I show doing the materials in both R15 and R16. Only very simple materials are used as this is a modelling tutorial.
This tutorial is hosted on Vimeo. If you head over there you will be able to download the original high res version rather than watching the low quality streaming version. The download button is for downloading the final scene file (Both R15 and R16 format).

  5. Soft Selections

Following on from our this 40 minute tutorial demonstrates and explains the Soft Selection mode that the Live Selection Tool, Move, Scale and Rotate Tools have.

Recorded with R12. Users of newer versions should be able to follow along without too many problems.

This tutorial is hosted on Vimeo. Clicking on the download link will take you there. You will be able to download the original high res version rather than watching the low quality streaming version.

  6. Cartoon Hand Modelling

Here's a 35 minute tutorial on how to model a simple cartoon hand. This tutorial was recorded with Release 11 but users of newer versions should be able to follow along without too many problems as nothing much has changed.

This tutorial is hosted on Vimeo. Clicking on the download button will take you there. You will be able to download the original high res version rather than watching the low quality streaming version.

You can also download the final scene file from the download button.

  7. Holes, Booleans & More Holes

Here's an epic 1 hour 15 minute tutorial showing various ways of creating holes in objects.

    Covered:
    Hard surface modelling holes
    Subdivision surface modelling holes
    Using "Point to Circle" script
    Using "PolyCircle" plugin
Creating holes using splines. How to use the SplineMask object
Creating holes using Booleans / Boole Object
Faking holes with Materials using the Alpha channel

This tutorial is hosted on Vimeo. Clicking on the download link will take you there. You will be able to download the original high res version rather than watching the low quality streaming version. You can also download the Point to Circle script via the download button and also the Polycircle plugin.

  9. How to do Depth Render to create Sculpting Stamp

Here's a 16 minute tutorial on doing a Depth render of a 3D object. The resulting gray scale image can be used to create a custom Sculpting Brush with a stamp. The tutorial at the end briefly demonstrates how the same image can be loaded into a Material's Displacement channel that's applied to a Plane object, with the result being actual height being generated on the Plane object.

  10. Sculpting

Here's a 55 minute (109mb) overview of sculpting in Release 14. It's more an overview of how the sculpting system works rather than showing off sculpting a model.

    Topics covered include:

    Basic usage
    Hotkeys / Interactive brush resizing
Steady Stroke for smooth / straight brush strokes
    Stamps
    Stencils
    Loading brush presets
    Masking
    Sculpting layers
    Symmetry

  11. Interactive Workplanes & Align Selection to Workplane

Here's a short 7 minute fun tutorial on creating a Mace weapon type model. All done using the new Interactive workplanes in R14 and also the new "Align selection to workplane" command. These new enhancements make aligning objects to other objects really easy.

To get this to work it's important to map the "Align selection to workplane" command to a keyboard short cut.

  12. Snapping, Dynamic Guides & Guides

Here's a 42 minute video (99mb) going over the awesome new snapping, dynamic guides and permanent guides systems in Release 14.

The video gives an overview of these new systems and how they work along with examples. Also briefly demonstrated is some of the functionality of the new Workplane system.

Apologies for the sound and image quality. The video was recorded on an old laptop.
