Cartoon Robot Challenge (View original topic)

Hi everyone. For this challenge we want you to model a cartoon type robot.
What we don't want is highly detailed mech's. It clearly needs to be a cartoon or toy styled robot. This should be a lot of fun and well within the reach of most members. Sketch and Toon renders highly recommended but not essential. Judging will be on the overall style and look of the robot. So a highly detailed robot may not win. We're looking for cool looking robots or cute looking robots like the one above.

The top 3 images will receive a Challenge award ribbon and also have their image featured in the Gallery (once I've repaired the gallery)

Now the rules:

Judges for this challenge: Cafe Staff.

1. Deadline: Midnight Pacific Standard (North America), Friday, 12th March 2010.

2. No time limit i.e. take as long as you like to do the modelling and texturing.
3. No imported models / meshes / scenes.
4. Members can enter multiple times.
5. The Cafe judges reserve the right to disallow any entry if in their opinion the entry contains objectionable, offensive material or blatant advertising.
6. PhotoShop post work is not permitted nor the use of other applications such as modo or Z-Brush for displacement maps. It has to be modelled and rendered in C4D or using a C4D renderer like Vray etc.
7. Maximum image size is 1280 x 1024. Please compress your jpeg images. Anything over 400kb is too big. (New attachment sizes.)
8. At least one WIP image in wireframe and solid render are required as a reply to this thread. The wireframe render should be done as a Cel render and with hypernurbs disabled. Check out our cel rendering tutorial here if you don't know how to do one. Disable hypernurbs in the cel renders so that we can see the polygon construction. Please keep the Cel renders as Black lines on White background.
9. No remote hosting of images. All images to be uploaded to the Cafe. Just press the "add this attachment" button to upload each image.
10. Only one final rendered image and one only wireframe image are required for your final entry. Hypernurbs must be disabled in the wireframe. We want to see the polygon construction.
11. All final entries must be made in the proper "Final entry" thread locate here.
12. You cannot use models etc that you have previously modelled. You must start everything new and specifically for this challenge.

Good luck and have fun.

Horganovski

Looks good Funkymonkey. For the mouth I'd select the four polys where the mouth area would be, do a very small inner extrude, a small regular extrude inwards and then a bigger regular extrude inwards to get the depth. The reason I do the small ones first is to tighten up the geometry in that area if smoothing the final model with HNurbs.

Cheers,
Brian

@supervee: my vote for the non-S/T.......I think you did a great job with your standard render, lighting and materials to make the jump from "photo real" to more stylized....same to nauble.

it looks like 99% of what s/t is doing for you is just the "inking" line around the your model - you could do the same thing in 10 minutes with a photoshop layer, wacom pen, and "hand" drawing the line

i tend to find most s/t renders pretty gimmicky - kinda like the 'water color' effect in photoshop - but maybe thats cuz I don't own it! ;-)

But remember that photoshop post aint allowed in the cafe comps, so S&T is one of the only ways to go. You could however use a very clever fresnel shader too to get quite a fun outline effect.

If you have Rel 11.5 you can do limited image editing to your image using the "Filter tab" In the Picture Viewer. If you enable filter you can control the Saturation, Brtightness, Contrast, Exposure and The Gamma of your Render. Its a nice addition to AR. But i think it only exist with Rel 11.5 and not earlier versions of C4D.

Use it as a tool and not a crutch to enhance your renders.

morpheus

Posted 06 March 2010 - 08:33 AM

You can do limited post effects in earlier versions but they have to be rendered out with the image if I remember correctly, so there isn't much tweaking unless you keep rendering out the still again and again.

...yeah...I was wondering that too..or some odd multi-pass render combo techniques that only the c4d wizards know about...

If you do a multipass render however, how are you going to composite them together if no external applications are allowed to be used.

Nauble,
I really like the textures you have for your Bot. If you don’t mind me asking, is it a effect from a type of render or is it just creative materials? And another quick question, how did you do the dude on the poster and the guys on the blanket. Either way awesome looking robot!!!

-Josh

nauble

Posted 06 March 2010 - 12:05 PM

No Problem, Its all Textures that i've either collected or created. The Bot has 2 textures applied to it. One is the base which is Color, Lumiance and Specular applied. The other is a dirt texture using the Fusion shader and the Alpha channel. The Bot on the wall is one i created and rendered and then texture mapped it to a plane. Finally the Bed spread was an image pattern i found on some textile site. I thought it was pretty cool.

Thanks for the Complements This has been a really fun challenge, as they all are.

Cheers

Dear Predator.
I love your robot(also carixpig's) but as you can see I am just quantity, not quality.
Please could you explain or point out a good tutorial to create those lovely curvaceous breast plates. They are almost sculpted and fit your model perfectly.I dont mean the ball shaped err.. breasts but the shapes they are set into.
I would be ever so grateful if you could explain.
Thank you.
BP.

Predator

@Horganovski THX, I use only shaders.

@bluntpencil:It is sphere deformed in axis "Y" and rotate around 90° (see cel render)

  • : cel.jpg

bluntpencil

Posted 09 March 2010 - 03:10 PM

Thank you for responding so quickly.

Sorry but I didnt mean the breasts, I meant the breast plates --the shapes that fit between the arms and the chest in the rib cage area.
You have one on the left and one on the right, together making up the rib cage area.
In English we call them BREAST PLATES. They cover the chest area on both men and women.
Why they are called Breast-plates instead of CHEST-plates I cant explain, English is a strange language.
I wasnt asking for the breasts, they are obvious to make!
Hope I have explained myself properly.
The shapes with the holes in them!
Thanks.

To speak honestly about c4dcafe you all are creating the sort of stuff I want to make and as a newcomer its good to see you all so good.
I had a closer look at the rules and apologise for cel rendering in the wrong colors.
I also noticed that you only post one or two pictures at the most each time.
I can only post at demo resolution,640 by 400, so cant get much detail in each shot.
Please point out to me if I am breaking any other rules, especialy the type of textures I am using.

I just read the rules and I see nothing there that prohibits building textures in Photoshop, etc. It just prohibits photoshop "post work";

in fact textures are pretty wide open except for sculpting displacement maps in zbrush, etc

do I read that wrong?
