Hi everyone. For this challenge we want you to model a Swiss Army knife. We want to see some really detailed modelling for this challenge. This should be a lot of fun as there are many different tools that you can include in your knife. If you want to go a bit wacky and add things you wouldn't expect to find then we're cool with that e.g. a bazooka :)

Judging will be on modelling detail but we do expect you to apply materials to your knife.

The top 3 images will receive a Challenge award ribbon and also have their images featured in the Gallery.

Now the rules:

Judges for this challenge: Cafe Staff.

1. Deadline: Midnight Pacific Standard (North America), Friday, 6 August 2010.

2. No time limit i.e. take as long as you like to do the modelling and texturing.
3. No imported models / meshes / scenes. You can however use an imported lighting setup and this lighting setup doesn't have to be by you.
4. Members can enter multiple times.
5. The Cafe judges reserve the right to disallow any entry if in their opinion the entry contains objectionable, offensive material or blatant advertising.
6. PhotoShop post work is not permitted. It has to be modelled and rendered in C4D or using a C4D renderer like Vray etc. But you can use imported texture maps, bump maps or displacement maps created in a 2D paint program or vector drawing program. Re Displacement Maps. You can create a displacement map in Photoshop for example but creating one in a 3D(ish) type program is not acceptable. This is a C4D modelling and texturing challenge not C4D and Z-Brush or whatever else you can do sculpting in.
8. At least one WIP image in wireframe and a solid render are required as a reply to this thread. The wireframe render should be done as a Cel render. Check out our cel rendering tutorial here if you don't know how to do one. Please keep the Cel renders as Black lines on White background.
9. Only 3 images may be submitted for your final entry. We want a maximum of 2 textured renders and one plain white render cel render. In the Cel rendered image, hypernurbs objects must be disabled. We want to see the polygon construction. Note the change in allowing 2 full rendered images. This allows you to include something like a close up should you want.
10. All final entries must be made in the proper "Final entry" thread located here.
11. You cannot use models etc that you have previously modelled before.

Good luck and have fun.

I can't miss this one!! I love Swiss Army Knifes :-)
The problem is that I just can't decide if I should model a regular one of if I should go crazy and model a knife with weird appliances.

Then why not model both? You know you want to.... :bigwink: :)

I would go for the second option Rui. :woohoo: Good luck.

Peace,

Ahahah, nice knife Rui :D
To be original I think that I am going to dedicate this contest to ladies, and create a Swiss Army Lady knife, whith rimmel, dribble of snail, all that stuff... :D

Just registering my idea - it will be the " Miss army knife " and will contain all the essentials for a Lady caught short in the wilds lol.

By all means, have fun with it and let your imagination run riot. It would be cool to see some realistic modeling and rendering but there's nothing to stop you entering something more wacky. Just try and add some nice detail to whatever you model to impress the judges

Cheers,
Brian

Wow, what a challenge. Swiss knives are interesting stuff both for the purpose of design as well as use! Here is a rough impression that I finished quickly. Of course, not for the competition :woohoo:

Hmmm. I like this one, although "technical" is not my style. So instead, I'll take a look at a future version of the Swiss Army Knife. The Swiss Army's technology advanced in AI has allowed the knives to come do things for us. But what happens when they turn on us?

I imagine lots and lots of legs / tools. I've only just begun.

Quick update. Some additional tools / things that will hurt you.

This is quite a coincidence. I had already modelled a Swiss Army knife in Modo, following a tutorial from Matt Brearley on CG Tuts. I have just finished re-modelling it in MoI. It was a lot easier and faster using Nurbs. Obviously I am not entering this challenge (I couldn't face modelling it yet again, this time in C4D) but here are a couple of renders of the MoI version.

Cool work Steve although I reckon a few fillets would have helped.

The fillets are there but they are too small.

I was going to say the same thing - a little more bevelling on the tool edges wouldn't hurt. Also, whatever image is mapped onto the environment and seen in the reflections on the tools, is a but low-res, which can be seen in the reflections.

Otherwise, nice model! :thisrocks:

P.S. Why isn't there a 'pirate' emoticon? :(

Cool idea. Just wondering which seaport the Swiss whalers sailed from

machinist

Posted 30 July 2010 - 10:50 AM

Well, of course the Swiss were not sailors, but Captain Ahab is said to have ordered the Moby Dick Special directly from the tiny village of Ibach, Switzerland, later known as the home of the Victorinox Swiss Army knife.

@ Tarekakkad,

I like it!
Only crit is that the refection of the chrome seems a bit weird and the corkscrew appears to be a little bit thin, apart from that, really cool!

Not long to go folks. This challenge prompted me to buy a new Swiss Army knife. My old one had the 2 blade points broken off. I've now got a bigger one with more gadgets. The scissors have been really handy this last week when I was away in a motel.

The classic 'get rid of the hooker with your swiss army knife in a motel' problem?
