Hi everyone. Following on from a very successful Sky Tower Challenge we want to do one of our old favourites, an Abstract Challenge. We've done this before but one area where Cinema 4D excels in is creating abstract images. The use of imported texture maps isn't really acceptable for this challenge so should only be used sparingly or not at all. Materials should all be done in C4D but you are welcome to use any Content Browser Presets.

The top 3 images will receive a Challenge award ribbon and also have their images featured in the Gallery.

Now the rules:

Judges for this challenge: Cafe Staff.

1. Deadline: Midnight Pacific Standard (North America), Friday, July 29 2011.

2. No time limit i.e. take as long as you like to do the lighting, modelling and texturing.
3. No imported models / meshes / scenes. You can use imported light setups if you want e.g. the lighting setup from the Cafe's download section (which is used in the image above). Sketch & Toons renders are fine.
4. Members can enter multiple times.
5. The Cafe judges reserve the right to disallow any entry if in their opinion the entry contains objectionable, offensive material or blatant advertising.
6. PhotoShop post work is not permitted. It has to be modelled and rendered in C4D or using a C4D renderer like Vray etc.
8. At least one WIP image in wireframe and a solid render are required as a reply to this thread. The wireframe render should be done as a Cel render. Check out our cel rendering tutorial here if you don't know how to do one. Please keep the Cel renders as Black lines on White background.
9. We want 1 only textured rendered image and one plain white render cel render. In the Cel rendered image, HyperNurbs objects must be disabled. We want to see the polygon construction.
10. All final entries must be made in the proper "Final entry" thread located here.
11. You cannot use models etc that you have previously modelled before.
12. Maximum image size is 1280x1024 and 400kb. Submit only jpeg images.

Good luck and have fun.

Didn't get a chance to finish my sky tower, so will do that in my own time now. This one I will be able to finish!! It's fantastic what you can achieve with mograph. I spent 2 minutes shaping a cube, and the rest is done with mograph, going to play a little more with this.

Hope your enjoying your holiday Nigel.

I think I'll compete this time 'round. :D Gimme a while, and I'll have some WIPs up in no time.

Alrighty! Well, I went a bit crazy, hahaha. It's a bit hard to tell from what's going on even from the cel. That orangey thing is just a torus that's been twisted a few times. I made a spherical landscape and plopped some hair on it. The confetti is made by taking PolyFX Deformer strapped to an icosa sphere, and putting some random effectors on it. That crazy stringy thing is a sweep NURBS that's attactched to a Tracer object that's connecting all of the confetti pieces. I'll probly change some stuff, but this is where I'm at so far.

I may also submit another piece that stands in contrast to this one. Probly something more minimalist, with less going on, haha.

It's so fun to do abstract stuff! :D

Excellent work so far folks. The good thing with Abstracts is they often don't long to do.

Here's my next one. It's a lot less wild. The idea behind this one is that many things seem very abstract in life until you look at them from the right perspective, then they make perfect sense. The scene itself is rather simple. I lathed the frame, and the room is just a plane which i extruded and then "welded" the corners together with an Optimize command. Then I beveled all the corners. I still need to finish texturing, and i need something for that light to go in so that you can actually tell it's a light. My floor tiles also look bad, but i think it's just the Antialiasing.

Hope you guys like it!

Well here's what I ended up with. This comes with a health warning and a free pair of sunglasses, it's just a little bright and phychedelic. When I first put this together I had hundreds of these swirls all over the place, but I had to rethink it because my poor old pc couldn't cope.

This topic reminded me of renowned Indian painter, M.F. Hussian who recently died in exile. Painting horse was his passion and some of his wonderful paintings depict horses in highly abstract manner. I have tried to recapture it, though in a very crude way!
