Hi everyone. I've put together an epic 65 minute tutorial showing various methods of creating smooth round holes or smooth round extrusions on objects. The image attachments below are a few examples of what I cover in the tutorial.

Covered:
Simple hole in 4 polygons.
Why using Booleans isn't a good idea and what happens when you try to bevel an extrusion created using a boolean union on 2 cylinders.
Holes and extrusions by copying in a disc object. Hard surface version and Subdivision surface variations demonstrated. Shrinkwrap deformer required. This technique forms the majority of the tutorial.

At the end of the tutorial I briefly demonstrate creating holes and extrusions with the "Make a hole" script by Sandi Dolsak, Cylinder to Cylinder II plugin by Jurgen Meier and a Nurbs version using MoI 2 and then exporting it into Cinema 4D.

Although recorded with R13, users of R11 and R12 should have no problems following along. 146mb. The tutorial can be downloaded here.

Enjoy :signthankspin:

p.s. This tutorial replaces a quickie one I did about a week ago. That was done to answer a specific question for a member. I wanted to expand upon what I covered.

Nice Nigel and thx, need it all that in one tutorial.

Now please...upload a 1 minute tutorial about how you can do that in MODO....
Would in take more than a minute? :signthankspin:

In fact I already had a modo tutorial on using the technique I demonstrated. You can download it here. As you can see by watching the modo tutorial it's a lot quicker using that.

Nigel,

Great tutorial - as always, it puts one more technique I never knew about in my tool kit. Question-why is the shrink wrap deformer considered a character animation plugin in R12's command manager? I could not find it via the standard menu which is a shame because it seems to be a great modeling tool that was hidden from me as I have yet to get to the character animation tools.

Also, any chance of uploading the English version of Cyl I and Cyl II plugins to the Cafe download section? Not sure if that is legal within Cafe rules, but I am sure if you asked the developer he would give you permission.

Right now, I use a cheat sheet to do the translations - rather cumbersome. Either that, or tell us how you updated the interface with the English translations.

Thanks,
3D-Pangel

Sorry...but I simply do not have enough faith to be an atheist.

Found the tutorial extremely helpful! Took me some minutes to understand what you meant with the distortion when using all polygons for the hole. After looking at the geometry of the cylinder and the flat surfaces that will be formed by the bridged polygons, it was clear what you meant. Thumbs up!

@3D-Pangel: Cafe member Contraffibularities prepared long ago a tutorial explaining very detailed how to translate the plugin into english and how to use it. It is also worth taking a look at it. The tutorial is here

Great tutorial Nigel! Now I have to find out how to get MOI to work on my Mac, hopefully, that doesn't involve putting Windows on the Mac.

The hardware requirements for MoI are pretty low. You good buy an old PC for a couple of hundred bucks and it would run fine. Terrific program.
