How would I make a zippering-up effect of a flat plane into a tube in Cinema 4D like the one seen in this video?

In C4D, have the "tubulin dimer" object (two spheres 45 x 45 x 45 cm)  in a linear clone (count 10, P.X 80 cm) as a child as a second linear clone (count 13, P.Z 50 cm). I added a Step effector to animate the rotation of the flat sheet into a tube, but this doesn't work. The Step effector just rotates the individual linearly cloned objects and doesn't treat them as a group (however, I can curl them into a tube by changing the Step Rotation .P in the Mode: Per Step in the linear cloner, but can't animate the position of this effect). Am I approaching this wrong?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!
Bonnie

Thank you soooooo much! I got it working (would love to share - how do you post an attachment?) and your clear step-by-step process in the tutorial really helped me understand C4D better in general. A huge thank you!
