I wish to emit rings downwards in a straight line.

In my attached picture, thats shown by the blue arrow

however, the red arrow shows the variation of the emissions which is really annoying, even when my character is stationary there is still a huge variation

in the emitter tab, i've got the emitter type set to cone, but that doesn't seem to help.

how can i keep the rings going down in a straight line when stationary and moving? i also plan to angle my character so they still need to emit straight (but not downwards) according to the character angle

sorry if i haven't explained too well, i'm not sure what i'm looking for.

Simple. Reduce the X and Y size to zero on the emitter tab. The particles now will all follow one after the other :)

You need to make the emitter a child object of your character. Where the character goes the emitter will follow.

Emitter tab. set X and Y size to zero.
If in doubt, scream and shout.
