C4D Cafe is very happy to bring to you our review of Poser 7. The focus of the review will be from the point of view of a CINEMA 4D user and how Poser 7 can be used in conjunction with CINEMA 4D. Like our other reviews in addition to reviewing the product I'll also try to show you how it works with diagrams, short flash powered animations and longer videos with voice commentary. Poser 7 is a vast application so I can only scratch the surface in this review. It won't be possible to cover everything. Those contemplating buying it should download the demo and have a go themselves.
Most people are familiar with Poser even if they don't own a copy but for those new to 3D, e frontier the makers of Poser 7 describe it as: "Poser 7 is the complete 3D figure design and animation solution. Artists and animators can create 3D scenes from a diverse collection of ready-to-use 3D human and animal models quickly and easily using Poser 7’s intuitive interface. You can also realistically customize your figures and scenes by mapping facial photos to create realistic 3D portraits, growing and styling real spline-based hair, and creating dynamic cloth objects. With Poser 7, you can create stills and animations and can quickly output movies and images for use in Web, print, and video projects. You can also export posed figures as 3D objects to add life to scenes created in other 3D applications. 3D novices, digital artists, and hobbyists alike can use Poser 7 to quickly create breathtaking results!"
Note: during the course of the review, e frontier was purchased and taken over by Smith Micro Software Inc.
So if you're like me and your human modelling leaves a lot to be desired then using Poser 7 allows you have professional quality figures in your CINEMA 4D scenes but more on this as we progress throughout the review.
Poser 7 is available for both Windows and Mac operating systems. Poser 7 now offers native Intel Macintosh support due to its Universal Binary executable.
Poser 7 is available as either 1.7gb electronic download or you can buy the boxed version as per the image below. I received Poser 7 as an electronic download. This took about 4-5 hours to download as the download speed wasn't the greatest even with my 10mbit/s cable internet connection. The download is one massive zip file (for Windows users) so go and make a coffee while the zip file is being extracted. Once unzipped you get everything that comes on the DVD in the boxed version and you can even burn you own DVD as you get the same autorun etc files as you do on the DVD. Installation is pretty straight forward. Just pop the DVD into your drive and let it auto run or manually run the Poser 7 installer. You'll want to go and have another coffee while Poser 7 installs as it takes about 20 - 30 minutes to install depending on the speed of your system.
I also downloaded Service Pack 2 at 30mb and installed that. This addresses a few issues.
