Lighting advice for scene

Hello, i am making a scene which is inspired from a book I'm reading. Im really trying to get the lighting right on this one.....Ive sued GSGs candles as i love the light they give. Im looking for any advice or feedback please

I actually quite like the look of what you have going on now, except for that hard shadow on the guy caused by the raytraced shadows setting in that light. I'd change that to Area shadows, but otherwise that's looking OK for me. Nice pools of soft light with realistic(ish) falloffs and good contrast between light and dark areas.

 

Which book are you reading ? :)

  • perhaps making it a soft shadow would work? with area I loose the person completely

    Yep - soft shadow will also be fine, and you can increase the sharpness very accurately to where you want it by increasing the shadow sample size.

    You can also make this work with an area light, but you need to know the area light rules to be able to see the shadow ;) Basically large area lights further away cause soft, indistinct shadows, whereas small area lights, close to the subject give harder, more defined shadows. You set the size of those lights in the details tab.

    Nice work, I like it a lot. It tells a little "story" instead of just being a collection of objects. The flames on the torches do look more like large candles but that's really my only gripe. Perhaps if you added some sparks here and there it would look better already.
