Separate objects of connected elements

Hi, is it possible with a script or a command to split an object into its individual connected parts? Eg: i got a car and the body is 1 single mesh. But door/headlights etc are all individual connected parts.
On polygon mode, i can press U-W and select eg the door of the care. Then i can split em one by one and delete the original etc etc. But this process takes forever when complex objects. Any thoughts?
