That model is already shelled, if you are using that expression in the technical modelling sense. It already has thickness.

So given that is the case I am wondering what else you might mean ? Can you elaborate ? :)

  • I mean  that I want to create a shell to the model I have presented to illustrate a mold it was molded from

Do you need it just for illustration purposes or are you actually trying to make a physical real world mold in order to cast the chair ?

Do you think it was originally molded as one piece ?

not sure you have a lot of options here unless you want to start pulling faces off the chair and remodelling it. Is it a nice model made with all quads, or is it a nasty cad model full of triangles and unconnected faces.

I think its either rebuild it or the dreaded Boole option, either option depends largely on the quality of the mesh you have i think.

Boole is not recommended but you might get lucky.

  • YES... it is one of those crappy cad models... Boolean is a nightmare - I have tried it.

Well Im no expert but this question of cad models comes up a lot on the cafe, and its usually the same answer every time which is to rebuild it somehow, generally using the one you have as a guide that you can snap to. No easy solution Im afraid unless one of the more experienced members have some tricks to pass on.

looks to me also like it may have been made in two pieces, as the seat has some thickness but hard to tell really.

    Good luck with it.

Yes, booleans are rarely the best way to solve anything and will usually fail on terrible CAD models. And yet unless you have master-level modelling skills they are the only option you have unfortunately. But even someone incredibly good at modelling would think twice before attempting this manually.

Do you have, or can you get any photos of what the moulds look like ?  Do we even know how many pieces the mould was made from, or how it fits round the object ? Kinda difficult to advise on an approach without that information...
