Phishing Text from Credit Card Companies

Recommended Posts

I have received 2 text messages from the two credit cards I have.  both have similar message about there is an urgent issue needing my attention blah blah blah and to click link in text. firstly that link is HTTP not HTTPS and secondly CC companies won't send you a text and have you click on a link.

What is more worrisome is HOW did these scammers get my cell number associated with the cards? A friend said she has received 3 of the same phishing text this week.

I don't have a dirty mind because I use Mental Floss.

It's amazing how many people don't know never to click a link in a text or an email from a bank / credit card, or someone they don't know. But I suspect the cafe readership is mainly among those that do - I'd guess we here are among the more technically minded and technologically aware. But I got a very similar thing last year - forgot to pay one bill, got added to some list somewhere, and I've had 3 texts a day from disreputable payday loan companies ever since ! If you reply to any of them you just confirm you are receiving them, so looks like I'm stuck with it :/

I had 2 of these last week , one from PayPal , which was a transaction receipt saying id made a payment of 150 pounds to some company and the other one was from the tax office, telling me they need me to login with my debit card details ready to receive my refund lol, both looked legit and someone who didn't know any better would have clicked on these links , luckily AVG scans my emails and killed what ever code was in there and put a tag next to it to notify me

i get stuff like this for years now. paypal spam even like once a month.  what's sorta new is mails from people claiming they filmed you watching porn through your webcam and threatening you to make it public if you don't pay amount xy in bitcoin to code blabla.  to me that's among the lowest a person can sink.

in the US telephone tech support scams seem to be very common, where they claim to be from microsoft or whatever company to help you with your computer problems. luckily we don't have that here (yet). there's several youtube channels of people trolling scammers on the phone, some of them are quite funny. this guy here for instance mostly imitates an old lady with a voice changer, keeps those guys on the phone for several hours and then confronts them with what they are doing. their reactions are priceless :D

I have gotten both of these and tons of spam phone calls and I am real tired of it. I never answer my phone unless it is someone I know.

Whoever said that things don't make you happy obviously didn't have Cinema 4D

Two years ago I received a fishy e-mail saying that my credit card had been blocked because misuse had been detected.

As my complete name was in the email  (which I don't use to write anywhere) I decided to call, but not the number on the e-mail, but the number on my credit card.

They told me to call that number, as it was a real email.

As I travel quite a lot and have to pay at hotels with the card, someone had got the data of my credit card. First they did a 1 $ payment to paypal, and after that it was about € 700 on different e-shops.

Luckily the bank blocked the card. But I had to report the theft to the police to reclaim back my money. In the end of the € 700 only about € 150 made it to my account, but that was a scary experience, as I was abroad when I was notified.

Anyway, as for today I block the card for usage in any country that is not where I am, and get e-mail and message notifications for every payment I do with the card.

You can never be careful enough. Although I never enter my credit card details in any e-shop which does not use encryption, and don't save my credit card in any e-shop to "pay quicker" the next time, I got hacked.
