The color in a transparent material is connected to the Transmission channel.

That is the problem.  The color for the specular material is in the Transmission channel, but there it no channel for Diffuse if you want it to have a diffuse coating.  It's like if you wanted to make an egg you would not only have Specular with SSS.  You would need that egg to have the outer diffuse and a SSS.  To do this in Octane you need to mix materials because there is no one material that allows this.  It kind of makes sense in that whatever light is reflected by the diffuse will not go in the egg to have SSS done on it.  It just seems a little strange that mats have to be mixed.  In Cycles I guess I never thought about it this way because mixing materials is so commen.

Without actually checking, you have SSS in Glossy and Difuse materials but not in Specular.  Mixing materials in Octane is also quite common.  It allows a block of jello to have a Diffuse powdered sugar coating that partially conceals the Specular jello.

There is SSS in Diffuse and Specular, but not in Glossy, Metalic, or Toon.  Seems to me there could be one material with all the properties.  Even with toon it could have a how much toon to mix in slider all in one material.  Instead they have to be mixed together separate.  In cycles all the properties of reflection, SSS, Diffuse, etc. are all separate nodes and can be mixed together which ever way they are wanted with the nodes.  While Octane has nodes it's not as flexible as Cycles nodes.

Octane could also go the opposite direction of having all properties in one material and have all nodes like Cycles.  This would make sense.  Now it seems weird because it's not quite all properties in one mat at it's not all nodes.  It's a strange mix of somewhere in the middle.
