What is an Irradiance cache?

A bit of a dumb n00B question:  What exactly is an irradiance cache?    And why would you want to cache any aspect of your GI solution?    And what happens if you DON'T cache your GI solution?

The manual does go into some detail about this ! Irradiance Cache is the name of a method of GI that is faster than QMC. It does cache light information, but so do Light Mapping and Radiosity Maps. The advantage to saving your cache is that if the scene is still (ie no animation) you can reuse that cache to save calculating the GI again on the next render. If you don't do that, it is simply recalculated every time.

on the contrary with unbiased render engines like Redshift or Cycles if I'm correct irradiance caching is not used or "somewhat of a maybe" and it's not always explained but only that one is better than the other and still it's the same architecture under the hud with different labels and colours

the latest thing is AI integration in some engines like what I know of in Iray but most likely beneficial only in conjunction with proprietary hardware
