C4D doesn't take CPU power on Mac

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I'm a Mac-noobie, so sorry if that's stupid. But... My C4D R19 does not utilise CPU fully while rendering despite Cinebench does. When I run CB it cranks up the frequency and spins fans pretty well, on the other side C4D does not force it to do the same, clocks are about at max non-turboboost frequencies and fans are not kicking at all.

What could that be?

I'm on the latest (and I see definitely not greatest) 10.14.4.

I'm not a Mac noobie, but I am relatively new to C4d. Been using some other 3d apps for a long time though. I'm not sure if this is the answer, but I know some 3d apps will let you specify if you want to use all the CPU's or only allocate some of them. The purpose would be to be able to keep working while doing test renders. Some people would want to set all available CPU's to render to get the quickest results, but that would mostly keep them from doing anything else with the machine while rendering. Like I said, I'm not sure if that is the answer, but it's my guess. Unless it is some sort of bug?

Go to your preferences and then select Renderer from the pane on the left. There's an option that says "Custom Number of Threads". I think that may be turned off by default, but you might check and see if you can force the number of cores you want running. You may want to leave one off however many cores you have though so you have at least one open so you can navigate your computer. I'm not sure if typically C4d is suppose to automatically adjust the number of cores it uses for best performance? Hopefully someone else will come along and shed more light on the situation.

Ah ok. I found this earlier thread. Maybe it will help? It looks like not all functions can utilize all the cores though. So I guess it depends on what you are working on in the app. There is even a difference in core usage between Standard and Physical Renderer.

Are you having a specific slow down, or just notice a number of cores difference between CineBench and C4d and wonder why?

The thing is the clocks are not reaching the top while rendering in C4D unlike as when CB runs. No free cores are left to chill

- Which Mac do you have?

- Which OS are you on?

- Which renderer are you using in C4d to test this with (Standard / Physical / Other)?

- What are you using to measure  CPU usage in C4d?

I ran Cinebench r20 just now, but I don't see anywhere where it tells how many CPU's it's using, other than to show how many I have. I use iStat Menu to monitor a bunch of the system processes. It only gives CPU usage as a percentage though.

If you can give more details, I'll try to test on my side and see what it gives me to compare.

Your own render and the Cinebench render are 2 different scenes. Are you rendering a complex scene when looking at the cores usage ?
