Rounded Edges on render time?

I remember trying to do this effect with R20 nodes and not being able to do it right.  What is happening is not really a rounding of the edges, but a normal map that fakes a look of rounding of the edges.  The thing you want to get is a normal map that will put a look of rounding on the sharp edges.  The trick is to get the gradient right on the edges so that can be added to the normal map.  For this it's a bit of a complex equation that needs to use the angle of sharpness of the object.  I don't think the AO node and mixing the resulting normal with the original normal would work.  I don't think it can be done in R20 without some good coding of a special plugin.
