Spline problem- bug??

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone is having/has had problems with the pen tool when drawing splines? Each time I press the mouse the whole spline dissappears so I can't see where I am drawing or access the two bars to make curves. HAs anyone ever had this happen? Does anyone know a work around? it's driving me crazy. THanks

Are you using 20.59 ? If so please update your profile accordingly. If not, update to that, and try it again.

OK. That is definitely not what that tool should do, and I can't think of any circumstances that would lead to that behaviour. But as it is working perfectly for me in R21 (so not replicable) and I know nothing about your system, I am not sure what to suggest other than submitting a support ticket to MAXON... but for what it's worth I don't recall seeing this problem ever before on the cafe, so I'd guess it is something system-specific.

It would be most helpful to both us and support if you made a video showing the problem in some detail.

That is really odd - never seen that behaviour before. You wouldn't normally draw a spline in Points mode, but that shouldn't stop it working AFAIK.

While you are drawing the spline do you have anything else selected in the Object manager ?

Also just checking you tried a machine restart...

  • Well I tried to switch back to model mode in the video, because I noticed it automatically switched  to points each time. I hardly use splines enough to remember, but I had thought i used it in model mode always before. it struck me as odd and i wondered if that was perhaps a cause. is there a setting for that somewhere that i could check into to for that specifically. I treid restarting the computer, but i certainly will try again! for this, i only had a single spline so far. i was just starting a tutorial and couldnt get past step one.

No, having checked again, that is correct behaviour, but I still don't know why your spline is disappearing. I guess this is one for support.

  • I want to copy here MAXON's response in case anyone else is having this issue. It worked for me (with a few tweaks to these instructions).  From MAXON: "Have you tried deleting your preferences? It's a great troubleshooting method in C4D and can fix a lot of random issues that may occur. Because, your C4D preferences may get corrupt over time due to anything from crashes, forced shut downs, OS updates, etc...

You can delete your preferences by going to:
Edit > Preferences in Cinema 4D

When the preferences window pops up, click the "Open Preference Folder" button on the bottom left. Once open, quit out of Cinema 4D (this is a very important step as this process will not work if the application is running).

Next, delete all the folders in the preference folder (READ BOLD PRINT BELOW BEFORE YOU DELETE). Finally, move up one level in the folder hierarchy to the MAXON folder delete all PRF files with _20_ in its name (If you are using R21 you would look for _21_, R22 _22_ and so on). Now. When you re-open Cinema 4D it will create all new preferences and hopefully get you past the issues you are experiencing."

    1. If you have plugins installed here you can leave the plugin folder.
    2. If you have custom layouts set up you can find them in in this path C:\Users\*USER NAME*\AppData\Roaming\MAXON\Cinema 4D R20_********\library\layout Make sure to save the .l4d and .prf files in this folder so you can put back once the preferences reset.
    3. If you have custom content created you can find them in in this path C:\Users\*USER NAME*\AppData\Roaming\MAXON\Cinema 4D R20_********\library\browser Like the layout just make sure to save your .lib4d files in this folder to put back once the preferences reset
