How do I import an .OBJ with materials?

Recommended Posts

Hello -

I'm trying to import an .OBJ into C4D. It has a .MTL file accompanying it, but I can't get it to load. The model just comes in black.

I tried the RipTide plugin/script and it didn't seem to work. Does anyone know how to solve this or get an .OBJ to come in with materials? I also have an .FBX file too, but importing that with materials is also unsuccessful.

I am on Cinema 4D R20 Studio. I'm working on a MacOS Mojave Version 10.14.6.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Please update your profile to the correct version to avoid confusion.

OBJ on its own as a format doesn't support materials at all. I thought R20 could deal with mtl files though so not sure why that is not working for you without seeing the file.

If you can't get the FBX to work either best bet is to see if the materials folder contains any bitmaps you can use in the Standard materials workflow.

FBX does support materials, but R17 also doesn't have the better FBX importer of later versions, so if materials don't work with that either, you are probably going to end up recreating them again in Cinema.

Thanks for your response! Just out of curiousity - what would you have a 3D artist send files to you as? I'm receiving these files from a third party, and I'm trying to figure out the best practice on what format I can receive them and load them up with their materials.

    Thanks again,

I've updated my reply since I noticed you weren't on R17 like your profile says.

FBX is what I normally ask for and what IME has the highest chance of coming in correctly with mats, but it's by no means 100% success rate. Far too often I have to recreate these things manually.

After a little research, it seems curious that your mtl file won't load when you import the obj file. That should work, and perhaps we should spend a little time working out why it doesn't in this case. Are you using open or merge ?

Only thing you can try is to load that .obj somwhere esle and see if its also happening there. If thats the case, then probably .obj file is corrupted in some way. Try with Blender or share a scene here so we can try the same on our side!

First thing, I've never have complete materials import into C4D, only basic colors. What I've found is that if you put your 3D scene file in the same directory as all your MTLs and texture files, this will give you the best chance for things to link up. It's as if the file paths are absolute instead of relative.

If it's coming in black the normals might have gotten flipped.  Did the UVs come in correctly and are there any selection tags on your geo?  Did any new materials come in in to your material window when you imported the obj?
