Places to purchase 3D assets

Recommended Posts

I'm with a team building an asset library app. I know there are many asset providers out there already but I think there's room for a better product. For instance, many of them don't have an app/plugin that does the tedious work of downloading and creating materials. Not to mention, assets quality isn't always what it should be.

We're in the early stages of our service, designed especially for 3ds Max users who render with V-Ray and Corona but we'll be adding support for more apps. We are looking to learn more about how we can help architectural visualizers beat those crazy deadlines, and more specifically, we'd like to learn about assets. As an architectural visualizer freelancing or working at a studio, you probably purchase assets to populate scenes.

  1. What sort of assets do you guys often find yourselves in need of?

  2. What sort of assets do you most often purchase?

Some examples: very specific harder to find and unique assets, designer items, scene fillers, assets that are harder to model, scanned organic assets, materials etc.

I would be very grateful for suggestions.

In general there is shortage of quality models of all kinds. Here the emphasis would be on good topology. Second would be a comprehensive node materials library...

As an Arch-Vis specialist, I can attest that finding a pre-existing model of this specific chair or that specific light fixture is a complete shot in the dark. Most often, I just hunker down and model what we need. If something is too complex to model in a timely manner, we find something similar that can be quickly modified, or simply adopted as a replacement. We actually go the manufacturers first to see if they have models. This approach has actually been getting better as more and more of these manufacturers put models right on their website, or can at least provide schematic drawings that help me model them more quickly.

So we very rarely purchase furniture or fixture assets. Things we tend to purchase more often are scene filler/accessories and plants/landscaping, which are plentiful in current 3D shops.

We typically do interior renderings. However, we get the odd exterior job here and there and every time I'm relegated to using a handful of car/vehicle assets based on 20 year old manufactured designs. I recently looked around for some updated sets, but the biggest challenge for us is finding C4D models with VRay materials. I know C4D isn't the industry standard for Arch-Vis, so we tend to use the exchange formats from purchased assets and fix up the materials ourselves. This approach is a huge chore when it comes to vehicles that are typically quite detailed.

Hrvoje : Why good topology is so important? I mean, there is a lot of practically broken models online free to download, also some shops have a little too simplistic approach when it comes to the plants, but I thought that in general the models on the market sold by shops like Evermotion are good enough when it comes to that part?

Vizn: The problem with models for C4D is a good point. What about render engines? When it comes to producers, I also worked as a modeler in archvis company and good projection drawings saved 50% of the work when modelling furniture or bathroom appliances of a specific producer.

I actually wonder if there is any other CG branch or industry that uses ready assets except architectural visualisation?

Many but 3 major reasons are that you can have artifacts in rendering (less of an issue these days but still), problematic behavior of modelling tools and sculpting results due to poor geometry and topology. In sculpting, for example, that can lead to need for heavy subdivision to get enough resolution in specific areas, which then results in artifacts and pinching in ones that are dense. Users will and do alter models. The 3rd and probably most important is for rigging purposes. If mesh is not clean (mainly organic ones) users can't really rig an animate them without heavy problems...

  • I get it. I guess the models quality this is one of the things we need to take care of. Do you have 3D assets store for C4D?  Maybe a one that provides the models with good quality that we can look up to?

Cafe is open for people to sell their own products. We started the service not long ago so it will take time for it to kick in 🙂

For reference you can check works from members by focusing on wire renders which show topology...
