"Selection Object" - deprecated?

Recommended Posts

I just learned about the Selection Object, for the first time.

Has this feature been deprecated?  It doesn't seem to be in the default menus (or well hidden) and information on it seems dated and scarce.

No, it is still there and shouldn't be deprecated because it's epic. In R21 it is under Select Menu / Selection Filter / Create Selection Object...

Think it was there in R17.

  • THERE it is (submenu*).  👍

    People don't seem to 'talk' about it much.  Maybe I'm not reading the forums (Character Animation perhaps?) where it's used.

    ++++
    *  Is there a method of ferreting out which menus include a given feature?  Like I could find "Add Selection Object" (not, I note, how it's apparently labeled in the menu- "Create" versus "Add", unless they 2 are different functions)

    I'd speculate that perhaps only 30% of C4D regular users know it even exists.

  • Huh.   --Should they?  Or is it just so esoteric it's not really commonly useful?

    They should. It's MASSIVELY useful - essential even, especially in huge scenes. Do you wanna select 100 of 300 lights spread out in your hierarchy more than once ? Or all the Ik tags in an epic character rig ?

  • Maybe all the users are too busy making money for me to have found them.  😭

    I'm not making money for you 😉

    I am fairly well acquainted with the selection object; it normally doesn't draw that much attention to be under constant discussion. I highly doubt that 3% number, although I am sometimes surprised what people (including me) don't know about C4D... 😎

    Yeah, there was a 0 missing there - was quite tired 🙂 I reckon about a 3rd of users know about that. It helped that Chris Schmidt included it in his Top Tips NAB presentation a few years back....

  • One of the reasons I couldn't locate it w/o help is, I think it's rather "misfiled" under Selection/Filter.  IMO it should be 'promoted' to the main Selection menu.
