how can I model this?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys! Im trying to model the paper cone in the picture..(it s a rolled  A4 paper sheet).  I need to start from a simple plane because of the texture I want to apply to it. Any ideas how to do? I have tried with the bend modificator but I cannot reach a good  resoult! thanx a lot=)

HI, try bend deformer on a plain with tweaking the angles.

Or a better one spline on a lathe.

Yep, came here to say that...

It can sometimes take a bit of experience and practice with the bend to know what to do with it to get this result, but keep playing, and you'll get there...

Or here's my file if it helps...

thanx a lot guys, it a more or less what I also did, but I couldn't find out a good angle/rotation of the deformer, so your file is very useful😃 do u know a way to avoid the conpenetration of the surface?

You can't avoid it using that method. You need to repair it afterwards with regular modelling tools like Normal Move and Soft selection etc..

Because the plane is parametric, you can use loads of segments to get the perfect smooth shape, but with that established, when you need to edit that shape, you should turn plane segmentation down to a minimum (say 10 x 10), then do current state to object, and edit the few edges that now remain so that you avoid overlaps, then get your smoothness back from a separate SDS object. I found Isoline and Line Modes for the viewport were most helpful in this regard, even though it looks confusing as hell initially - if you keep moving the view around as you work you should be able to get a relatively clear idea of which few points need to move where...

Just a quick note if you use SDS. Don't use regular Catmull clark for this. Use OpenSubDiv instead, with these settings, and your corners will get preserved nice and sharply.

No I'd say you probably can do something about that, but I would need to have your file and the texture to know what. You can zip and upload those here or link via dropbox or similar...
