UDIM Creation Tools

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have been developing some new tools to create UDIMs, move UVs from one UDIM/Material to another, and transfer texture from your existing material across to the new UDIMs.  Just wondering how many of you out there are actually importing and using UDIMS currently in your workflows, from Mari or Substance etc... and if you would be interested in seeing me continue working on these types of solutions for you.

Cheers,

Kent

This looks great. I am eager to hear more about this. Are you planning this for R21 & 22 or its just for R20?

@Rectro

What do you think?

    Hi Kent.

It looks realy interesting what your doing there for those who use the native C4D render engine and bodypaint.  I like the bleed, it seems to work well from the video.  To be able to paint across UDIM texture sets is a nice welcome feature as well, Substance Painter is only just getting there with this now.  MAXON needs to get UDIM supported within C4D nativley as we need to do without the need for selection sets and multiple materials.  As you know the way it normally works is you  make a single material and that material understands the standard string <UDIM> to load and manage tons of texture maps often made externally. This is especially important for displacement maps, each UDIM must have the same material values, and things would get manic once you start using 20+ UDIMs with the current selection set workflow.  The way around this would be to at least have a central link so only one material which has to be edited which in turn updates the entire set of materials.

When I had got Vray, the Vray render engine took care of the UDIM workflow, as Redshfit does even better.  With Substance Painter next going to offer proper UDIM workflows and many using external render engines I wonder what you could do to bridge that gap between Substance, Mari, even Zbrush made texture sets that export standard UDIM formatted files to make it easier to import these into C4D own standard and Physical render engines, and even convert them for render engines like Redshift, Vray, Arnold e.c.t.  They have material converters but are made along side C4Ds own limitations that being it dont  support UDIMs.  I can see an advantage of what your doing mainly in the areas of bodypaint, and C4D own sculpting tools so as to bake out UDIM maps.  MAXON in the end will have no choice to support UDIMs as it has to work across their own UV tools, bodypaint, sculpting, texture baking, and Redshift.

Im not sure where Bodypaint is heading, but it has stiff competition.  Blenders own sculpting tools are starting to shine brighter right now.  Users of C4D still want to stay in one app if they can.  If your plugin could import and export UDIM maps that would be cool?

  • Hi Dan,

Thanks for the feedback. You can already import UDIMS into C4D standard materials using the UDIM Importer

This also comes as part of the 4D Paint Bundle

For changing settings over all your materials actually works ok. You just need to select all of them on your object, which lets you make changes to all of them at the same time.

The only thing missing was changing specific layer settings (transparency, layer type, visbility etc...) on the textures, which is what my tools also allow you to do.

I do see all of these tools as temporary until MAXON adds proper UDIM support. But for any artists out there that want to get started with the concept of using UDIMs in C4D, or importing them from other packages, then that's where these tools help fill the gap for now.

    Cheers,

    Kent

As we dont know when MAXON will be on to that Im sure your tools are well worth investing in, and a valuable asset.  Must be so nice to be able to do what you do,  keep up the good work Kent.
