From iMac Pro to PC - Build

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

Currently using iMac Pro and Corona rendere, and while I love Corona the CPU rendering is just too slow.

Im about to invest in the below build - with either Octane or Redshift (any favourite here?)  are there anything I should be aware of in teams of overheating, power supply etc?

Thanks in advance.

That is a nice machine. I would say that Redshift is smarter option since it is owned by Maxon 🙂

Why did you choose the i9-10940x over the Ryzen 9-9350x? The Ryzen is cheaper, faster and uses less energy.

Also why don't go for a realy fast nvme SSD instead of the SATA one? If you use a Ryzen as base you can even get a SSD that is nearly 10x faster due to PCIe 4.

I bought a PC last year. I concentrated my energy getting the specs right - but in reality the thing I still find most unsettling is the monitor. Definitely allow for a good chunk of money to make the adjustment from the imac's excellent screen easier!

Also - why not get a high spec threadripper and stick with Corona instead. There is a good coversation on builds here: https://corona-renderer.com/forum/index.php?topic=21416.780

I see little reason to pick an intel system right now. AMD have cheaper, faster, newer, more efficient systems at virtually every price point. Why have a $800 14 core 3.3/4.6GHz intel chip when you could have a $750 16 core 3.5/4.7GHz AMD chip?

That memory is a bit on the slow side. I would look at 3000MHz+ sticks rather than 2400

Skip the slower SATA SSD drives, pick a NVME SSD for 5-10 times the speed.

  • Thanks for all of your inputs, I'll definitely try to work them in, just what I needed.

    Update:

I changed the intel 14 core to the AMD 16 Core, and the Sata ssd to the NVMve, added a better cooler, though at the cost of 64gb of ram, so now im with 64gb of ram, which I think will suffice ?

Thanks again - order has been placed. 🙂
