Materials not rendering

Recommended Posts

I`m creating my own spaceship render from scratch for my own learning purposes as I never made anything in C4D just used already existing models. And built this. I got to the point where I started adding some basic materials to see how it would look like when I ran into this issue where the applied material looks all fine in the viewport but when rendered it doesnt apply to the full object. When making the model I did only make one side only then mirrored it and joined together the two with stitching and polygon pen then connect+delete into one object.

I have tried to export the body out and import it back. Assigning a new material. Converting current state to object. Nothing helped. I copied over the model to a new project where the render settings were left untouched (apart from the added ambient inclusion and global illumination as I`m using objects to light up the model for now)

My render settings are pretty much stock. Changed to physical. The sampler is adaptive (for my final renders I change to progressive) and the added ambient inclusion and global illumination. Nothing else I can think of to try and fix it. I have very little time to work on this and I already worked a month on this and I dont want to restart to remake its body.

Welcome to the cafe 🙂

That looks like a modelling error to me / intersecting polygons etc, but we can't know without the scene file (.c4d). Pls upload it.

A general note though. Progressive mode is not meant for final renders. You should use adaptive for that.

Hmm.. Could be. The model itself is very bad imo. Like I couldnt make it any better. Its hard... But gotta start somewhere. Anyway here is the model.

Not sure why you have sent me a .3ds file - the .c4d file would have been better, but it's OK I can import that. The mystery is, that even though the model is (forgive me) atrocious and somewhat riddled with errors, I am getting the texture rendering totally fine for me.

My conclusion from this is that you must have another copy of it in the scene somewhere that is untextured, that is in a very similar position, and therefore obscures it partially from render. This mistake most often happens when you use the traffic lights (2 dots next to object in object manager) to turn off an object (click to make the dot red) in the viewport (upper dot), but forget to also turn it off in the lower dot which is what hides it from render. Could that be what is going on here ?

Don´t need to export as 3ds file, you could save scene in c4d file. From this part of model (which is really bad) there´s not problems (some polygons are have inverted normals, but this is not a problem here. Problem could be in another part of model. Try in original scene hide every other parts of model from render (or use layers) and render. Then unhide other parts (blocks or one by one) until you find duplicated mesh...

  • Huh would makes sense. I`ll try and see what you recommend bezo too. You can have the full scene, I attached it. I just had the .3ds at hand, wasnt on my home computer.

And I know its a terrible terrible model honestly. Legit my first try with zero tutorials. I have so much to learn about making 3d meshes and models. Currently though I just wanted to practice all my current skill (and non existing skills) in one project to learn and learn and hopefully as annoying these issues are run into them to learn.

Well we can certainly help with that, and indeed poly modelling is my own area of specialisation so you'll end up talking to me and the other modelling guys here a lot if modelling becomes your thing. It isn't possible to learn those skills overnight - it takes around 2 years to become a competent poly modeller, and rather longer to become expert. But it is an exceptionally rewarding journey, and well worth the effort you put into learning it. I have to sleep now, but will pop back here tomorrow to suggest some good starter tutorials for you. It's a very good sign that you have just waded in there though, as the actual doing is more vital to your learnings than any one video...

  • Yeah I know its a long road to even be considered any decent. I`m willing to do that though. I really like creating things and would actually wanna work in such industry in the far future. Goal of mine so I`m happy to put in the effort and time. I need to learn a lot regarding materials, making textures, normal maps etc etc but would be nice to start with decent models and for what its worth Im happy with how this disaster of a model turned out. And thanks for the tutorials and stuff that you can link me tomorrow.

I like this set of starter tuts for Cinema. They are getting a little dated now, in that some things are in slightly different places in later versions, but the bare essentials are very much the same so they are still valid.

This is the the first of 5 videos that cover the main areas of Cinema, and you should watch them all in order to be off to a pretty decent start.
