Any tips on how to get rid of this wing overlapping.

Recommended Posts

I made a very simple rig of butterfly wings, but I can't figure out how to stop them from colliding with each other while keeping the motion looking somewhat organic.

I know very little about character rigging, but maybe there is something way around this?  The overlap is so slight.

Adjusting weight maps just makes the flapping look off and so does lowering the angle of the flap.  I don't know how to get collisions to work with this sort of thing.

It might be hard to assess this sort of thing without the project file.  I've attached it below.  It uses two simple joint chains for the wings, and a mesh deformer is used to reference the low poly skins to apply to the actual wings.

Any help would be awesome.  Thanks!

  • Here is a version with the Signal plugin for the motion instead of keyframes.

    Hi,

There's a few things going on that make the wings intersect. The arc of the keyframes created by signal and the strength setting of the IK bendiness. I took a couple of liberties here because I do not have Signal. I reduced the wing flaps to 3 key frames and then "Repeated" the wave in the timeline. I adjusted the rotational value of the "Front Rig" and "Back Rig" nulls, and altered the strength settings of the IK. You could probably accomplish the same thing using Signal. Hope this helps.
