How do you add a sky, not an HDRI?

Recommended Posts

So I have a scene where I have a ship flying around. I want to pan the camera from any direction. But I would like to add an image that can be in the background. If I use an HDRI. It does not feel correct when I move around since the whole image moves too quick when rotating, panning etc. So whats the proper way to composite a sky? In cinema or after rendering? I use after effects mainly for compositing. Thanks for your time guys!

For that, I think you will have to use volumetric objects. If I were you I would start googling Redshift volumetrics or how to create real clouds in C4D. I am sure you will find something.

It's not clear what exactly you mean here.  For example Igor is trying to help you place real 3D volumes in your scene, but I suspect your question isn't about how to add clouds, but rather how to get the sky dome you would use as a matte painting as the background for your shots. You do need to say where your plane is in relation to the ground, because that'll be the only reason why your HDRI-on-a-Sky plan is looking wrong - I bet the HDRI you're using was taken at ground level, which means if you try and look around the sky from a seriously elevated position above World center, then of course that will look weird. But how many HDRIs are taken at the sort of heights planes fly at ? Not very many, so you need to either find one that is, or make one, or fake it some other way.

The 'faking it' bit is the most interesting part of this question to explore, I can think of several ways to go here, but you do need to tell me how high that plane is, what the weather should be doing, where or if there should be clouds / mist or sun, and how long your average shot length is ...

  • Sorry for late reply, not sure why I didnt get notified. So yes that's exactly what I was thinking. A dome style. I recently found out that theres a think called Environment thats meant for this kind of stuff. So Im good for now. Thank you guys for replying though.
