Controlling Material Animation with Plain Effector

Hello. 
Can anybody help me figure this out. 
I'm trying to control the start of a material animation using the plane effector.

So like you would do with time offset for the animated object inside a cloner, but for the applied material,

in order to get a smoother transition between materials, with maybe some turbulence noise effect or something. 

So in other words, I would like to get a custom animation change from one color to another in the material tab,

and than control the start of the transition on each clone individualy using effectors.

I'm sorry for the newbie question, but i cannot figure this out.

Maybe an entirely different approach is needed. I beleve you can do this with volumes in r20, but im using r19.
