Trouble with a texture stretching on a sphere

I can't figure out to get the settings right on this texture to where it will evenly distribute across the sphere, rather than scrunch at the top and stretch at the bottom.  This is using the displacement channel with a basic polka dot image that is evenly distributed.  Any advice on this?

Have you tried UV mapping the sphere? If you UV map it, and relax it, the texture should be even across the entire surface.
