Random question about wireless mice for PC laptop

Recommended Posts

So I'm looking for a wireless mouse for a PC laptop, but from what I can tell they all have a receiver which needs to be plugged into a USB port… So I'm wondering why they need this receiver rather than just using Bluetooth? Using a receiver would permanently take up a USB port… Is this not the point of having Bluetooth? I'm speaking as a Mac user looking to get a PC laptop…

I think it is to do with polling rates. Bluetooth polls at 133 Hz vs the 1 kHz-2.4 kHz or so that RF mice typically get, so they feel smoother, less laggy and more responsive, especially in gaming where I am told these things matter most. You can get bluetooth mice, and they tend to be quite cheap, but bluetooth is not flawless, is slightly more annoying to setup than RF, but other than that is a solid choice if you don't need game-level mouse speed or do not have a USB slot free.

ok, thanks for the info. I suppose it's not the end of the work to take up a USB slot, but I just felt it was a bit of a waste.

Most "cheap" mice that are wireless are still all Bluetooth at their core. If you want something that is not BT you need to look at Logitechs Lightspeed mice, like the G903 for example. The dongle is just as big as any other dongle, so it basically vanishes inside the USB port.

I have that mouse, and I love it. Battery lasts a long time, you can still use it with cable if it's every empty and they even offer a wireless charging mousepad so you never have to plug the mouse in again. Of course, that is rather useless on a mobile setup.

Another suggestion would be to have a combo like I have, wireless MX Master 3 and MX Keys Plus. Awesome wireless gadgets, beat I everything had.
