Folding a Flat Model Several times

Recommended Posts

I have the task of animating a hernia patch that needs to be folded several times to be inserted into the body. Imagine it's like a rectangle of screen door material, it's not like paper where it will crease and lie flat, it will have a curved bend to each fold and then need to do the same the other direction.

Any strategies on how to accomplish this?

My first thoughts would be joints or a spline deformer, A lot would depend on whether it was rolled up or consatina style folds. Im not into joints and characters much but I imagine joints for that wouldn't be too difficult. You still have to control the spline if you go down the spline deformer route so joints could be the best way to go.

I am constantly delighted and surprised by just what sort of ridiculous moves can be achieved with stacked bend (and other) deformers. I think they could well be the answer here too... or perhaps some combination of those and Pose Morph...
