F-Curves / Tracks not showing in Timeline, unless I specifically select them

According to pretty much every online tutorial I've seen, opening the Timeline to show F-Curves or the Dopesheet should show all the animated things in my scene. But it doesn't. It only ever shows whatever I'd previously told it to show by right-clicking something in the Attributes Manager and doing Animation > Show F-Curve. I've hunted through the View menu in the Timeline to find what I may have inadvertently selected to not show my keyframes/F-curves, but cannot fix it. Is there any way to get C4D to show me all the animated things by default, like everyone else's C4D does, or - even better - automatically show the F-Curve of whatever object I click on in the Object Manager, without me having to tediously tell it to through right-click > Animation > Show F-Curve?
