A Tape Measure

Recommended Posts

  • Ok, so I modeled a tape measure (the case) and I would like to have it dispense it's tape wildly around the screen for a construction video. I was thinking that I could maybe make the tape with a sweep nurbs along a spline and maybe put an align to spline tag on the dispenser, but im having some trouble. i cant get the sweep nurbs to line up propperly, and also i'm thinking im going to have an issue when it comes to putting the material on the tape. wont it look funny as you play with end growth? the material will jump around right?

  • i dont think i explained it to well, here is the project file. now the problem is i cant get the tape to line up with the tape measure. the sweep nurbs moves away from the spline's path and with the align to spline tag i dont know how to adjust it so that the spline alignment is adjusted to where the tape should come out and not the center.

    Hej

Had a look at your scenefile.

First the spline under tape, needs to placed in (0,0,0)

The Tape path's Intermediate Points should be set to Uniform.

Then alitlle bit of tweeking, and it should be allright.

    Hopes this helps.

i see what you are getting at, and i am now a step closer. but now on some of the curves the tape starts shooting out of different parts of the tape measure, observe:

  • 28-46... ...it's not too big of a deal, because it will be animated very quickly, and it is just one element in a very busy animation... ...i guess my problem now, really, is texturing the tape. I made a jpg that I want to use but i dont know what kind of maping i can use to get it to stay on the tape correctly (thanks for the help btw!)

    here is the tile

    No prob!

Do you want a smoother curve? If yes, change the Tape path Splines Type (maybe B-spline) and play with the Number (higher setting)

Reg. your texture problem, how about a Flat mapping - think that will help, if not please upload the .jpg and I'll take a look at it.

    Edit: just saw the file:)

    ok iv fixed it

need to open file make sure u are at frame 0

select spline name=spline select both point then make there x,y position 0

then change to move tool and change y position 3841

    then select spline name=Tape path

and change intermediate points to uniform

    then all should be aligned

Reg. your tex, just aply it, and scale down to 1% on the Lenght Y. (maybe delete the old texture tag - then aply!)

  • thanks for all the help so far! You guys will like the finished product i think. I'm going to start messing with the texture right now, i think the tape is mostly straightened out.
