Netrender

Hi

I have some renders to complete that are currently taking 11 to 20 mins per frame on my amd2600. I was wondering about using netrender (something I have never done). Could I use my friends pc who lives across the road to help using netrender or do the machines have to be wired or on a wireless network to work properly.

Thanks for any advice.

Hey Steve. Theoretically you can render on any machine on the planet so long as you know its IP. I set Net Render Client up on my studio comps and Server on my home PC and got it to work.

Now, this was a couple of years ago and I don't remember most of the settings, but yes it can work.

Yes, you need to be able to connect the machines. You can do it via short haul wireless or you can use the internet, just keep in mind your security.

Thanks guys

It just so happens that my friend is head of IT at his place of work and he specialises in networks etc. I asked him to look at netrender on the net and in the mean time we have remote connected. I have sent him the client to set up, in a couple of days hopefully we should have a little render farm.

Just a quick question. Where do the finished frames go to from the various pc's that are used?

Thanks

Steve

Yep, that would be correct. You will also need to read up on file types( I use TIF), assembly of the frames with something like QuickTime Pro, and something I never really got to work well, using project files. There are a few things like this that will save you much frustration if you take the time to read about them first.

Thanks for the link OD1. Looks very thorough. You must of been posting at the same time I was replying to JKirk :)

I will see how I get on in the next few days.

Fingers crossed all goes well.

Ok I've made good progress in getting Netrender going. The only thing that I can't get the clients to see are the plugins used in my scene. Which folder do the plugins go on the clients.

Cheers

Steve
