Yet Another Baking Question

  • I'm currently working on some low polly assets that I'll be exporting in Collada.

All texture and lighting is to be baked on, and I just realised I've hit a snag.

What to do for metals and reflections? The exported object isn't going to have the luxury of picking up reflections as it is all on it's own (so nothing to reflect).

I know you can't bake reflections, but I need some kind of cheat to simulate this as this is what makes metallic textures convincing.

Can you maybe bake the environment channel instead?

In fact reflections can be baked. Just give your object a "Bake texture" tag and enable Reflection. Bake away. Then manually apply the texture created to the object by loading it in the colour channel.

    Hope this helps.

  • Aaah, cool. Thanks Kiwi!

How does that work though, it must bake them relative to the active camera?

I can tell I've got a lot of experimenting ahead to get this looking good.

I've also realised I can export area lights too, so will try using those to generate the reflections first I think.
