spider animation

Damn that looks like it could really cut the time you need to set up and army of mechs walking around.

I feel i might need to learn to code...

Yes, and the other two examples aside from the spider are also excellent.

An auto walking person would be great, similar to Poser, tell them to walk from A to B via the stairs etc.

I would love that, but haven't a clue how to code it, come on guys :)

Those procedural animation rigs looks really cool, thanks for the link Karl.

It seems like the spider one is using the same principle as the one Kiteman and I worked on, it uses distance to determine if a leg should move or not. What we didn't get working yet is making it walk over an uneven surface. The lack of a ray collision node in Coffee is a bit of a pain but I believe there's one in Python.

Speaking of Pythons :) the snake rig he made looks like it would be quite straightforward, especially since we have the Trace object in MoGraph which would work for tracing the path of motion.. might have to have a go at that one.

Cheers,

Brian

More spider stuff...

I've been thinking of doing a photoreal spider for some time so I have all these links hidden away in preparation.

  • hi again,

I have a problem with the animation of the spider i did

i made a walk sycle animation and converted it to motion clip and did a loop for that animation (in the motion clip atribute)

the animation look good, but the moument i try to do a key for start point and end point one leg (left leg)

is not moving, just drag by the body and all the other legs are moving ok.

    whay is it?

    thanks in advance

    Hi Hagayd,

even if I drag the body by hand the left backmost leg does not move while dragging.

Imho it could be a priority problem, so I solved it in your scene using this workaround:

    - remove the body animation or use the old spider

    - create a null object

    - animate that null object on x axis as the body would move

    - use xpresso to bind the spider body global position to the global position of the null

    I hope this helps

One crazy idea that I had to animate spiders legs was to rig the legs normally then attach the foot goal to a point on a sphere. The sphere is made to roll over a surface using the Rollit plugin. The leg then goes up and down and doesn't sink into the surface. The I haven't tried this idea yet as it would take a bit of setting up to connect the spheres for each leg to a master null object and the body of the spider.

Really good idea but I can't help it, reminded me instantly of

Ah, and btw... found it complex to animate six legs, too.

    But spiders have eight legs.

At least all that haven't been close to my cats.

I made a 6 legs version Brian :D , and a first dyn test . but legs weren't synchronized yet here . the goal of this is to only animate the master controler .. all is made depending on this ( anticipation is used to calculate feet positions in 'future')

Kiteman, that is an excellent rig! I have a project coming up that requires animating a line of photo-real ants on a counter in a medium framed shot. To keep it art-directable I need control of my ants in a similar fashion (i.e. 1 null control for gross movement) Is this something that can be adapted to other character shapes easily?

    thanks,

    g
