Affecting Groups Of Clones

Recommended Posts

  • Topic Author
  • Hi all!

I have a cloner object with several kinds of clones (imagine they're spheres and cubes for example) and instead of indexed they are in a random order.

Can I use an effector to affect only the spheres and another one for the cubes?

I have too many clones and not just two types, I have at least ten different ones, so I rather not use selections.

    Is there any other way?

    Thanks!

You are looking to restrict the effector based on clone type?

Thanks for giving me a brain teaser :)

Meanwhile, you can use Mograph selections or formula effector which could be a possible solution for you, depending on the exact need. Check this topic:

  • Ah interesting topic, thank you for pointing it out.

    It nearly worked!

But because I have the clones set to Random, every other clone can be either... is there a syntax to select them by name maybe?

Is there any chance you can upload your scene file? It would be easier to offer solutions :)

I managed to build a setup that works. It boils down to iterating trough hierarchy off clones, and with a bit compare logic you can output string comparison with name and output that as a boole :)

I would use a bit of trickery using null objects as place holders and using multiple cloner objects. Provided you keep the random seed the same the illusion is that the objects are random clones of one cloner rather than 2 cloners.

Attached is what I mean. Only the cubes are being affected by the Random cloner.

    Hope this helps.

  • That's a very sneaky solution Nigel, I can even select both Cloners at the same time, them and it still works nicely. It may mean having a cloner per group but that's fine it does the trick.

HSrdelic, if you still want to give it a try, see attached the file in which I was testing your formula. What I need is to affect either only the green objects, for example.

Yes, I understand the issue and I have built the setup :)

As far as I can tell, that is not possible with formula effector since it doesn't provide access to clones in terms off names or color.

This one relies on object names, not colors, but principle is the same.

Since you are on 10.1 scene file won't help so here is a screenshot from Xpresso that can help you out:

  • Wow thank you Hrvoje!... I'll give it a try and see if I can replicate that (I'm actually on 13, haven't updated profile sorry)

If that works, you're leaving me no option but to go and purchase your mograph training bundle ;)
