So I had the need to model a car rim. I was able to get it good enough to render from a distance, but would never stand up to a close-up. As you can see from the screen grabs, it looks OK with Subdivision turned on and the reflections hide the flaws well. The mesh is still messy. I started with the image you see and wanted to create one section, then copy, rotate and weld together.  I think it started off cleaner and got messier as I kept tweaking things.
