Any tips on blending shadows?

Any tips on blending real shadows with rendered shadows for compositing? Basically I have a 3D object going from a sunny spot to a spot in the shadow of a wall. I rendered the 3D image with hard shadows and without the wall, so my shadows are always hard. I'm trying to mask the real shadows but the difference is too noticable even with a soft mask. I'd need a way for the shadows to blend perfectly when they collide like they do in real life. Hope this make sense.
