how to cut a bear shape out of an array

I used Cloner to generate a cubic array, please see the attached image. I then used the Volume effector to generate that bear geometry you see in the image. But the problem is that what I actually need is kinda of the opposite-I want to use the bear geometry to cut a hole out of the array. Boolean didn't work for me, maybe too much geometry and start to run very very slow. Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

Just a matter of tweaking the Volume Effector's settings to make it cut out. Attached is what I mean. Min Max settings are changed and falloff is inverted. Also make sure that "Render instances" is enabled on the Cloner. Hope this helps.
