    Hi All, This is my first time at Siggraph in a long time! Last year I had just started at MAXON and it was too late to attend. I am extremely excited to be going back to Siggraph and with MAXON!     Many people are disparaging MAXON's new CEO as some sort of "marketing guy from Adobe", but this is false, and unfair. His previous roles were all in engineering and engineering management, not in marketing, and he would in all likelihood not have been involved in Adobe's licensing changes over the last few years. Its fine to express all sorts of opinions about the changes in MAXON's licensing, but let's not resort to that kind of ad hom. It's not productive.

    The other day my pc crashed with several apps open. C4D survived ok, but Photoshop had reverted to OOBE - welcome screen, load of panels I don't use etc. I tweaked PS back to how I like it and that was that. 2 days later I needed an image for C4D, so I opened PS and created a 1000px square doc, only to get an error message 'could not complete operation - disk full'. I looked in explorer and sure enough my SSD was bright red and completely full. I closed everything and ran virus check, and other stuff and the SSD went back to normal. I opened PS - disk full. This went on and on - problem kept appearing, disk full. Didn't Einstein say that repeating the same thing, expecting a different result is a sign of insanity ? On the 10th attempt, I opened PS, made a doc 1000 ... hold on 1000 INCHES ? The PS reset had set the default units to inches, and I was trying to create a doc 7,000 square feet. PS standard res is 300dpi, so pixel-wise I was out by a factor of 10^5. panic over...

    So far, someone from MAXON will gladly chime in to explain some aspect of the subscription plan. They will also chime in to defend the position that Prime MSA holders can get a Studio R21 license via their last MSA purchase for about 1/3 of what Studio users have to pay ($250 vs. $720). Their defense though again gravitates towards subscriptions: "that is why Studio users can get two years of subscriptions for a 20% discount". But what took literally a ton of emails to sort out was that if you should ever take that offer in the future, they will deactivate your perpetual licenses - in essence locking you into subscriptions. They were very shady in divulging that information and it took some robust dialogue and painfully direct questions to get them to finally answer it. Now, where MAXON is COMPLETELY silent is defending why we should accept a 50% increase in renewing their annual perpetual license over what they paid for via the MSA program. Not one word of explanation or spin as to how this is in our best interests. Maybe they can say "well we canceled the MSA program" and that is the price of an upgrade without the MSA program. So we really didn't raise prices, we just cancelled a program. But then defend this: WHY DID YOU CANCEL THE MSA PROGRAM? Well, there is no defense. The MSA program was cancelled because they want people dependent on paying annual subscriptions for the simple reason that a companies "appearance" of value increases with a re-occurring revenue stream. It is a great selling point during quarterly earnings reports to say that subscription revenue growth is increasing and makes up a large portion of their total revenue. So in Nemetsheck's and MAXON's eyes, their thinking is "hey, we will make the annual cost of a subscription the same as the old MSA price so users will eagerly switch over of a subscription model. While it won't increase revenue (this year), changing the source of that revenue to re-occurring revenue is a great message to our shareholders." So again, the benefit is all MAXON and there is no way anyone from MAXON can defend this position on a community forum in any way that users will accept. Shareholders love it, but we don't because it provides us no value -- so why defend it. They tried to put lipstick on this pig by selling it as "3D for the whole world". No. It is "higher stock price for Nemetschek" and don't ever forget that. Again, the only thing they will listen to is a drop in revenue beyond what they forecasted. Right now, we are all exercising our last MSA purchases. The true test will come with what we do with R22. Do we convert to subscription? Do we pay the higher perpetual costs? Do we go somewhere else? That is why R22 will be a critical for both MAXON and for us as well. And don't think for a second that subscription prices will remain the same over time. Trust me, once they have coerced a large portion of their user base to subscriptions, those prices will rise. Maybe not in huge jumps, but they will steadily go up. And now you are really stuck. There are no alternatives but to pay at that point. While I love the fact that we have this great participation from Mr. McGarvan in this discussion, our complaints will make no difference and will generate no discussion from MAXON. Sitting on our wallets is the only voice we have. Dave

    Hello, you all! ... Noises are not easy to understand at first sight. Al least, no for me. I needed to train that. I've done hundreds of exercices and now I think I can speak maybe a little of this noisy language, voices of an infinite world. After some work, nothing was the same, again. Noises are 3D artists best friends for modeling, for texture, for animating, for every level, even for pleasure - I can watch them for hours. I've learned for free and for hours, for years, in this chair. Watching videos in youtube, in cineversity, in vimeo. Now I want to share my workbook with you all. More than 600 pages - I could not believe it!! - with CINEMA 4D renderings, about possibilities, about learning how to see, to understand all of them. ...     Welcome. I read all these posts and I am heartbroken and amused at the same time with the despair that many present. You are looking for conspiracies and dramatizing the situation. And yet everything is clear and obvious! So maybe I will help and explain in points. Everyone who has active MSA on September 1 will get a perpetual version of R21 + access to Cineversity - nothing changes here for MSA owners. The validity of access to Cineversity for MSA owners ends on the day the MSA expires. If someone wants to have access to Cineversity after this time and does not want a Cinema 4D subscription, they can buy independent access, as it is at the moment. MAXON plans special offers for MSA owners as MSA ends. These offers are not yet known. Anyone who has any version of Cinema 4D without MSA will be able to upgrade any version to perpetual R21 - that is, as it was, but there will be a bonus for owners of older versions of Cinema 4D who can upgrade to the perpetual version at a more attractive, the same price. From September 3, the R21 subscription will appear on the MyMaxon website for purchase in monthly (84.99 Euro net payable monthly) and annual (49.99 Euro net payable in advance = 599.88 Euro net) + mutations with RedShift. Anyone who has MSA (regardless of what Cinema 4D version they had before) will get perpetual R21 and will be able to have any number of subscriptions at the same time - one is not mutually exclusive. So you can, for example, buy a monthly or annual R21 subscription at the normal price and have a perpetual R21 all time - all on one account. During the MSA you can, but do not have to, convert your perpetual version to subscription. This conversion gives a 20% discount on subscriptions for two years, but you lose a perpetual R21 (this is a bundled transaction, the discount comes from somewhere). Then all previous versions up to R20 are still valid. There are people who have always bought MSA always wanting to have the latest version and have no attachment to the old versions, so it's attractive to them. When someone updates their MSA in August now, they are in a very good position. It has its perpetual R21 and can easily wait what MAXON will present next year in August. The prices of the perpetual update R21 to R22 will be known later, probably next year during the presentation of R22. Versions from R21 can be installed on any number of computers. You can remotely take over licenses - i.e. you go home and take over the license on a laptop. Licensing is checked every 14 days to make sure that someone under one license uses Cinema 4D on 10 computers. Since the R21 version there are no serial numbers, hence the plugins that required the number must be updated. Those that did not require a serial number will work. So to sum up. If you have active MSA in September, you get perpetual R21 + Cineversity. When MSA expires, you'll be able to continue using it and purchasing only Cineversity access. When R22 appears next year, you will be able to upgrade your perpetual R21 to perpetual R22 at the price announced next year. You will also be able to convert (if you have MSA active) your perpetual R21 in R22 and then in R23 with a 20% discount (but you lose the perpetual R21). You do not have to convert or upgrade your perpetual version but buy a subscription at a normal price, monthly or yearly. You stay with perpetual R21 and you have the R22 subscription. Everything that I wrote above is explained many times and on the MAXON website and on the forums, I do not understand what is incomprehensible to someone here. Personally, I am very happy with the subscription. It will be appreciated by everyone who has a company that is developing and when new jobs need to be prepared. It also gives you the chance to standardize different versions of Cinema and other older 3D programs in the company (e.g. Softimage). Thank you MAXON! :)

    I do hope that they are still trying to sort out what the cost of perpetual upgrades are going to be because what I am hearing from MAXON USA representatives is that the cost of upgrading in the future will be as if your MSA program no longer existed. For example: Prior to 9/1/2019, the cost of an MSA was $725 and with that your got the next version. If you did NOT have an MSA, then the cost of upgrading to the next version has been $999. From 9/1/2019 onward, MSA's no longer exist. Therefore the cost to get the next upgrade will be $999. This has been clearly stated over and over again, so I have to assume that is the current policy that MAXON would like to stick to unless there is significant push back from the user community. In MAXON's mind, they are thinking "Well, if you want the same price then go with subscriptions". Subscriptions hold the user captive and free MAXON from the consequences of not releasing new features per any schedule. If you don't like the pace of development and stop paying the subscription price, then you can't use the program. Imagine if MAXON decided NOT to release R22 until 2021. Subscription users are essentially paying $1440 to keep using R21 over that 2 year period. Perpetual license holders of R21 pay only $999 over that same period. That is an extreme example, but you get the point...subscriptions free MAXON from the financial consequences of not delivering meaningful updates on a regular basis. Subscriptions are NOT to your advantage...they are to MAXON's advantage. Never forget that. So MAXON wants people to go to subscriptions or pay a 53% cost increase in perpetual upgrades (from $650 to $999 in less than 2 years). Either path is an advantage to MAXON....none to the user. No matter what type of crappy "3D for the whole world" spin you want to put on it, you need to realize that this is their agenda. It is an agenda that Nemetschek put in motion by forcing the founders out and hiring an Adobe transplant to execute. Disregard EVERYTHING that any corporate shill from MAXON tells you....it is greed, plain and simple. This is a different MAXON. Well, there should be consequences to treating your user base this way and that is what MAXON is going to try an gauge over the next year. What MAXON has yet to figure out is what will every MSA user who upgraded to R21 perpetual will do when R22 comes out when faced with a $999 cost to continue being a perpetual license holder. Yeah, Prime MSA holders are dancing in the streets over getting R21 Studio for $250 today but what they have yet to realize is that their annual costs increase 400% to $999 if they want to keep using R22 perpetual. Even if they decide on subscriptions, that is close to a 300% increase in their annual costs (and again close to 400% if you use Redshift). So again, if MAXON is still "taking their cues from the user-base" concerning perpetual upgrades, they are in fact wondering two things: "Will we get away with a massive price increase on perpetual license sales to pretty much everyone when R22 comes out?" "Will everyone instead move to subscriptions which gives us all the power in deciding how to release new features?" So despite what everyone is talking about, the line in the sand is not today (9/1/2019) but rather whenever R22 is released. That will be the big decision point for everyone because right now life is normal...we are all under the MSA program one last time and paying what we paid in the past. The big decision point is next year and that is why MAXON is listening to us today. So my hope is that a 61 page thread of rage over the "new" MAXON makes them realize that the users are NOT going to take this quietly. I hope MAXON steps out of their echo chamber and listens to our disappointment in them as a company that we trusted for decades. I hope they feel the silent pull that Blender R2.8 is having on us as users and drop their arrogance over the purity of their new core and recognize that Blender has some pretty good features that C4D does not have...and they have them for FREE! The new Blender interface lowers the learning curve significantly so that just makes a decision to forego a future with MAXON that much easier. I hope MAXON takes to heart that the Blender Organization gives us something that the MAXON organization is trying to take away: Freedom from incurring significant financial consequences when deciding how we want to use the program. So if MAXON is truly listening, then let your voice be heard over the next year. Dave

    Can finally show some work I did for the Walking Dead Season 9 last year. This was a pretty dreamy project. The props department needed a sword designed for the Jesus Monroe character. They gave me basic dimensions that they had tested out with the actor and some research from the comic and previous action figures and then I was let loose from there. I designed three different options - this is the one they ultimately went with. Stitching, seams, etc in the renders could be better overall, but the whole thing went together in just two days.

    Here are some answers I got from EU MAXON that may clarify some things for long-term users: you have several options: You could extend your current MSA for another year (from September 2019 – August 2020). In this case you would get a permanent license of R21 in the beginning of September. Then you can decide to stay with the permanent license or to switch to subscription. As long as your MSA is valid we have a special offer for two years – you can switch to subscription for 959,81 Euro net (this price is the two year price) and we also check the remaining months of your MSA and credit this amount. Please note that with the change to subscription the permanent license of your R12 will no longer be valid You can start with subscription in September. If you order the subscription in September we can offer you the same like above You can start with subscription in October or later – in this case we can offer you a price of 479,90 Euro for the first year. In the second year you would have to pay 599,88 Euro net You can upgrade to R21 perpetual for 850 Euro net Cineversity is part of the subscription. If you want to add Redshift then you additionally have to pay 240 Euro net per year (so it seems that the amount you have to pay at the moment is a bit cheaper).     Hi guys. After seeing Redshift was on sale I thought id give it a go with the demo. I picked my last render to compare it with so used the same scene. It took me a good while to translate things which its still 100% but I think it makes a comparable render to Vray Alsurface. Vray Alsurface took 5hours, Redshift took 2hr 3min.     Was just modelling some Gothic Arch Vaults for various tutorials and my own general amusement, and thought I should probably throw a few together and at least make some sort of vaulted corridor render out of the various bits I modelled. Hence this, which I thought was quite nice, if perhaps not quite finished - probably needs more going on or a focal point in the scene (and some better texturing) to finish it off, but posting now in case anyone has any bright ideas about what that could be... This one was... Physical Render, Adaptive / Automatic / 15% /3, 3, 2, GI IC+LM. 45 mins or so. But was playing with Stereoscopy as well, so for any of you that still have the Anaglyph 3D glasses (red / cyan) that came in the box with R14 this one's for you... Being both quite lazy and lacking time, all I really built for this scene was the geo below, which was then cloned about and put next to a wall ! All good fun though, and very enjoyable modellings. Couple of GIF tuts about that over in my GIFTIPS thread for anyone interested... CBR

    The first part goes well beyond expressions, but is certainly interesting. The second part is an own topic but something i personally would like to see, just like an at least basic compositing node system. Both not really Xpresso features though.

This is a very early Alpha plugin and I work on it every now and then to add new features and workflows. But it will keep changing and being updated.     As much as I'm happy you're being more aggressive against competitors.. here is the main reason why I'm probably dropping out. Perpetual. Now it's great you have it.. it's the reason I jumped on. No, it really is.. I have far too much experience with old projects that needed a look down the years, only to find that the current version (adobe in this case) no longer had that version available. Which threw a wrench because the plugins from back then don't work on the current version. The story is similar for other tools as well, but let's not stick too long on that. But knowing that I can just return to my old setup as it was back then, is assuring. With the current perpetual I would now have to pay the full price every single year.. but with MSA I got the same version cheaper, because I stuck with it. With this pricing, you're essentially giving me the middle finger. Not cool.. not cool at all. (If there is a way to get the new version perpetually like before, it isn't on your page. But something tells me it will still be nearly 2x if that's the case. Still not cool.) Had you've gone the route of propellerheads, allegorithmic etc.. where you pay to own... it would have been an entirely different topic. Then subscription would make much more sense, if you as a reward after the full year get to keep the version you're on perpetually. And it's not like it would cost you anything either... it's already been sold & used. To be short.. with the current price structure it no longer makes sense.. if things are going to cost me >2500€ then I might as well go back to Autodesk. Because I can get their entire media suite for less per year, and still have money left to spend on keeping other tools up to date. This isn't cheaper.. you've just raised my yearly cost by nearly 3x-4x, and robbing me of the historical projects in the process. EDIT: the €2500 is in comparison with the Full Autodesk media package... sorry if I made things unclear. Which makes me sad... I really like C4D. Oh.. and the license manager needs to be able to sign out a license remotely... what happens if my laptop get stolen and I didn't sign out. No, don't tell me... contact support! No, wrong answer... let me do it myself. See how messy this gets? Internet is only great while it works after all. And copy ideas from your competitors more frequently... they have no qualms copying things from C4D after all. And implement Cycles if you don't want to make a GPU renderer yourself (prorender really isn't as developed as Cycles)... it is under Apache License version 2.0 license after all.

    Hi Rick, as you can't make a statement about MAXON's future strategy. Maybe you can tell us something about the reasons for the current strategy. MAXON has decided to end the existing MSA and introduce a rental option as the only renewing option. What advantages does MAXON hope to gain from a rental license over an MSA? I am asking this, because I can't understand why MAXON is alienating its MSA customers, even though they produced a steady stream of income (which at the time was the communicated reason for the MSA) thanks a lot Jops

    In some regions the MSA was offered as part of an automatically-renewing contract, in others it was manually renewed each year - so policies differ by region. As far as the question as to why MSA is being discontinued - I think it honestly comes down to trying to simplify things. It would be confusing I think for both us and users to have two different types of subscription, and it would be really difficult to manage the accounting side for both. A real focus of this effort was to simplify the product & pricing options, because we recognized how much confusion they were causing. That's why we've eliminated the editions and why we're only presenting 5 options on the website (one of which is Perpetual - I feel I have to keep reminding folks). With regard to plugins - our vibrant community of third-party developers is one of Cinema 4D's greatest strengths. For various reasons (almost all technical), we didn't give developers as much of a heads-up as I'd like, but I hope they're as excited as I am about the potential for a large increase in the Cinema 4D user base. It's true many will have to adjust their licensing, and in some cases it'll make sense to adjust pricing. Unfortunately that's unavoidable - but I think there's a great opportunity here as well. If any developers reading this have concerns, I'd love to chat with them directly - just send me a PM so we can start the conversation. Some folks seem to be latching on to the idea that McGavran "started with Bevels". In fact, he started with Field Forces and said that was his favorite feature. The new Caps & Bevels - which happens to be MY favorite feature - was the second thing he announced. I think there's great balance in these two features - one very advanced toolset and another that's designed to make it easier to achieve one of the most basic tasks in 3D. Both are implemented in a very MAXON way - a workflow that's easy to understand, invites artistry and experimentation, and provides access to powerful real-world functionality. -Rick (Sorry for the delayed responses - I left early Friday and took Saturday off for some R&R. Wasn't trying to duck questions - just promised my wife I'd put the computer away for our anniversary.)

    Hi Rick! what is wrong with the current licensing system? I have C4D installed on my PC and laptop. No hassle at all. Why did you have to change that? Why do you feel the need to control and "punish" your paying customers? You won't prevent piracy. That is for sure. I am just disappointed by your new business strategy, the direction MAXON is heading the lack-luster R21 release on top of that. R21 will be my last version as I am slowly switching to Blender and Houdini/Solaris.

    Unfortunately this is true. It's on MAXON website: "Billed Annually". That's why I said in this thread that MAXON's advertising is disingenuous. There is no such a thing as a monthly U$59.99 subscription. There is only a U$720 annual sub and a U$94.99 monthly sub.

    Well, speaking for all those wage slaves who have never owned a copy of Cinema, I think this is a great move. C4D is paid for out of the operating budget of the studio I work in, and the different packages and the MSA have been a total ballache to deal with. Management everywhere have this issue with the difference between capex cost and opex costs - while they will think nothing of paying for something monthly, they will baulk at the idea of spending lump sums of any magnitude. I was looking at sharing one R21 licence with two people, and two R19 licences floating about. Now we can put a nice easy case forward for a monthly cost. And I should be able to easily move workstations, home and the studio. When Adobe moved to subscription it was the same thing, instead of fighting for a colossal upgrade cost, now we are all on the same version, all of the time. Remember having to skip an entire generation of creative suite because you couldnt pay for it? I do, and I'm thrilled I dont have to any more.

    Wow....so even if I decide to buy a perpetual R21 license, that license is ONLY perpetual if I continually upgrade via new perpetual licenses. Once I switch to subscription, my perpetual license fails to activate. That is just wrong. Also, I think someone said that the cost of the R21 perpetual license was 850 euro which is 15% more than the annual subscription price. So my fears are realized: there is a strong push to perpetual and R20 is the last truly permanent license you can own whose activation can never be tampered with by MAXON as it does not use their server activation routine (Note: Should MAXON ever push out a "bug-fix" for R20 in the future....be careful as that could also include the requirement for server activation). Sorry MAXON folks. No matter what you want to tell yourself so you can sleep at night, if you can turn off my perpetual license for whatever reason, you have become Adobe. It is as simple as that.     I would like to see a series of best practice workflow guides on modelling small objects, with attention paid to solving ngons. I still get stuck on the simplest of flows and I never know where I should be solving things, or the best place to start modelling. It would be great to have a series of videos where you model each of the small parts of something, like a robot arm or something like that, and then since you have perfect workflow, people watching the videos will pick things up that are not the 'purpose' of the video, just little workflow tips and solutions to modelling problems. For instance this arm - I can think of a couple of ways of making the claw, but which one is best and wont have me solving ngon lines for four hours in the middle of the night? Do I Boole them out and then try and fix them? Do I start with three circle polygons and connect them? That base object, should I just intersect some different objects and hope for the best or is there a way of using SDS for this? Should I use the volume builder? I know this is above and beyond the scope of the topic, but if you dont ask you dont get! Also, the videos needn't be the high polish of the VP days, I think I would learn a lot from just a screen recording of an expert user making such objects, even with any mistakes left in. Thanks

    KVB is correct in the setup. However, you have turned off 'Seen by Reflection' on the Floor.1 object in your image. It is the Floor.1 that is making the shadows on the rocket lighter because it is bouncing the sky light back up at the rocket.

    I really haven't done much with C4D in a long time apart from make small things to print. I am missing the big projects so I have decided to dive back in. I realised how rusty I am with everything character related and that my previous methods would just not cut it. So, its back to tutorials and new better techniques. This animations theme is all about anxiety and general understanding of metal health and a story is loosely set surrounding a poem written by a good friend of mine. I found a tutorial series on YouTube which was perfect to capture the style I wanted so although it was in Maya and in a language I didn't understand I could follow along enough to start my main character. There is still much to do and things to change but I wanted to share my progress here as I haven't done that for quite some time. I also watched some great tutorials on the hair tools and using splines to get the shape you want and it worked a treat. Its early days but I am excited to be using C4D and pushing myself again. it cost too much not to use it properly. I welcome any crits but please bear in mind I have only just started and nothing is final.

    No no no :) Just set up a material once, specular layer killed, and as you want it otherwise, then use Set as Default to get the same one every time you click new material after that ;) CBR

    well that depends of course... if substance will be included in the CC sub i prefer that adobe bought it, since i have a CC subscription. if MAXON would have bought it i would have probably to pay extra anyways, just like for redshift ;) i really think it would have been a good idea to include redshift with c4d by default, just like autodesk did with arnold.

It also advises newcomers where to look first so that we get a minimum of repeat questions that have already been answered or are addressed elsewhere. 1. Questions about something you are trying to do in Cinema. Our Categories are based around key areas of Cinema 4D, so go to the MAIN FORUM PAGE, and look down the list of Categories, and think what is the main area of Cinema about which your question might apply. Very often it should be obvious where to post a question, but that is not always the case. Sometimes questions span multiple areas. Try and choose the Category that relates most to your question, rather than other things in your scene. If you are not sure, pop it in Miscellaneous Questions and we will move it for you when we have enough info to do so. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Example Questions: Q: How can I make / model this ? Category: Modelling / Various First of all SEARCH for keywords in your question across the whole site. We may have answered your Q already. If you can't find the answer that way, go to the Main Modelling Category and look at the various subcategories within that. Choose one you think most suitable and start a new post there. Using the cafe's image upload system upload a couple of pics of what you are trying to make, and tell us your level of modelling experience, together with any ideas you may have had, and what, if anything you have already tried. If you have a .c4d file that isn't too massive, upload that as well. The more info we have, the better we can help. Q: I've done this, but it's all going wrong... Category: Various First of all SEARCH for keywords in your setup across the whole site. We may have answered your Q already. Think about your project and the things in it , and specifically WHAT is not doing what you want. Pick a forum section based on the problem rather than any other components of your setup. If you have a scene full of modelling and texturing, keyframe animation etc, but you think the problem is something to do with MoGraph, then the Mograph (general) Category is where it should go. Make a new Post in the most relevant category you can find. For these sorts of questions, always upload the c4d file, or if it is too big, upload to Dropbox or similar, and then link to your post. Maybe post a screenshot or 2 as well so that members don't necessarily have to load your scene file to get an overview of the issue. If a problem is especially complex, you can even make us a video that explains it, and upload that to YouTube, again linking to your post. Q: How do I use the XXXXXX tool ? Category: Various You may not need to post at all about this - The manual can probably give you the essential information, or Youtube probably has a tutorial or 10 about it, so search there first using the terms 'c4d' and 'tool name', which will usually reveal lots of results. But if you have checked those places and do need to post, then please find the relevant section to which the tool you are interested in belongs and post there. Q: How do I make this sort of texture ? Category: Texturing / UVs / Various Pop to the category above and choose the most relevant subcategory for what you'd like to use to make the texture. If you think Nodes is the way to go, there's one for that. Likewise Standard and PBR materials for any question about those workflows... We have categories for 3rd Party Renderer Textures, and Substance pipelines. Always Upload a pic to show us what you are aiming for, and if applicable, what yours looks like now ! Q: I am using Cycles for C4D, but have a problem with the Tracer. Category: Mograph We have separate categories for 3rd party renderers (in rendering AND textures), but please only use them if your problem involves those render engines. The question above should go in the MoGraph (general) Category because the Tracer doesn't involve Cycles. But if the question was about cameras or textures or lighting, that does involve cycles, so should go in the appropriate 3rd Party Renderers category. Q: I have no idea where to post this... Category: Other / Misc Questions When you just don't know where to put it, Misc Questions in the Other Department is the answer. Q: Where is the New Users & Beginners category ? Category: N/A That no longer exists. Posts showing us things... The Lounge is mostly for non-questions. Here you will find the right places to buy or sell stuff, discuss non-Cinema things, and get latest news and cafe announcements. Q: Look I found this cool new thing ! Category: Lounge / Lounge General Show us the new exciting things you find In the Lounge sub-forum... Unless it's a plugin, in which case it goes in Xpresso & Python / Plugins Q: Look I made this cool new thing ! Category: Rendering & Lighting / Wip-Final Images / Gallery The WiP / Finals Category in the Rendering / Lighting Section is the place to post the artwork you have made when you are ready to show it off. Works in Progress should expect advice and possibly criticism, so tag it WiP if you want to encourage this. Final images can go here too, especially if you'd like feedback, but why not upload those (no WiPs please) to the Gallery as well ? Please title them nicely and complete the other info when you do this. If we like your uploads they may well appear in the Homepage Gallery Slider at some point. Please also vote on other people's work in the Gallery, which helps us choose. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General Posting Etiquette. Site Search (top right) is your friend. Please post in English only. If necessary use Google Translate. Make sure your Profile is showing the correct version of the software you are using. Often advice is version-dependent. If it is wrong, go to your profile, find the Edit Profile Button (top right) and change it therein. Please make sure you have checked the manual before you post a basic question. You can right-click most items or properties in Cinema, and choose show help to get right to it. Try and make your questions as detailed and specific as you can. The more precise your question, the more precise the answers you will get. Don't make your question too wide-ranging, general or vague. Do not post the same question more than once, or in multiple categories - duplicates get deleted straight away. Tell us how much experience you have in Cinema. If you have tried stuff already, tell us what. Always upload a scene file if that would help us understand the problem better. If that scene is too big to upload directly, upload it to Dropbox etc instead, and link it. If your scene files are huge, copy just the problem elements into a new file, or otherwise simplify it, and upload that instead. This can also be helpful for avoiding client NDA issues. Try to avoid posting linked images - use the cafe's own image upload system instead. Please only upload *.jpg, *.png ,*.c4d or *.zip. If your question / scene upload involves texture maps, please include them in the upload (do Save Project with Assets, and zip the folder that creates). If your question is very complicated to explain, why not make us an explanatory video using screen capture software, but please note this cannot be uploaded directly to the cafe. Instead you can use Youtube or similar, and link it to your post. Use the Likes System to thank or react to the people who are helping you... Title your posts relevantly and accurately - a post titled just 'Help me' helps nobody help you, and reduces the amount of people who will click on it. Conversely, a well-titled post will quickly gain the attention of the people with the right skills to be able to answer it. Try and spell key words correctly, which helps with later searches. Try not to use phrases like 'Help me now,' or 'Urgent' etc. People will help in their own time. If you find the answer before we do, post it and share your solution... Only add Tags if they are relevant, and not the same as the category you posted in ! If you do get your question answered, don't forget to Mark it Solved at the top of the thread.     You're not allowing for the time spent during tutorials, at SIGGRAPH etc explaining the 555 malarkey. Probably breaks even . The bit in the video linked above where he simulates the air inside Tubeman by sending the wind object along the tracer generated spline is typical CS creative thinking.

    Just remember the closer edges are to each other the more or a crease will show so its about distributing the edges as even as you can. If you select the inside polygons and use the Iron tool your see how its trying to distribute the edges evenly. And here with the better-distributed edges. An extra little tweak with the slide tool to get the right edge verts even.

    This is with an n-Side radius of 2cm. I like to use an n-Side instead of a circle because it's so easy to control the number of subdivisions, but you can use almost any shape you like.

    This quick test is mainly a 2 octave stretched Fire shader, altered so it fills the entire plane, animating slowly (TF=0.1), with an (also animated) electric driven Distort Effect on top. Tiny amount of cyclone in underneath all that. CBR

    I am desensitized to the sort of violence in this to a large extent, not because I see a particularly excessive amount of it, but because I get sucked out of the horror of the moment by the technicality of the achievement. Those creatures in Ep 1 were UTTERLY brutal. but were one of the most impressive things I've seen for while, and any empathy I may have for the predicament of 3D characters is largely stymied by the brilliance of the execution (and I mean that in both senses !). It's damn hard to realistically smash a 3D face, and bloody reds are a great colour scheme :) The sheer volume of violent content available isn't necessarily indicative of a world that is more violent than it used to be (aggregate long-term data suggests the very opposite; that now is the least violent time in all of earth's history - there is slow, gradual upward curve toward enlightenment values and away from violence. Personally, I value that the only violence I am exposed to is safely delivered to mostly fictional characters in our entertainment media, where of course it has a justified place as one of the more unsavoury parts of the human condition...

    I'd guess not if I had to, and we must remember that Object Tracking was brand new in R18, so you may have one of the earliest versions of it, which is not as capable as more recent iterations. I think best bet is just to try it and see... Captain Natester has found you the best tutorial for that sort of thing, so just get in there and see what works... CBR

    I think have done almost exactly this for a client a few years back :) In that case I simply animated the plaster: 1. Moving up and down. 2. With a bend deformer to roll it onto the limb 3. Also had to keyframe plaster rotation a bit to make that work But overall, should be fairly quick and painless... One thing to note would be to make your plaster out of even, relatively dense all-quad topology, that way it will respond to the bend deformer nicely. Oh, and because an arm (is that what that is ?) isn't flat, you need to have already deformed (or modelled) your plaster so that it already conforms to one direction of curve across the arm, if you see what I mean. I do this usually with 2 opposing additional bend deformers , affecting half the mesh each. You could also animate those, so that the plaster falls mostly flat, then transitions to the confirming shape on the way down. But if you want to do this with something more capable than bends / basic deformers to control the deformation of the plaster, then I'd use Pose Morph to get much the same effect but with point-level control, which may make it conform to the 'arm' much more naturally. If you are doing, that, ignore what I said about making the plaster overly dense - if you are using PM, then you want the minimum amount of points you can possibly get away with, and you can use SDS on top of that to regain your curves and smoothness.     Indeed. Trying to pick apart CG in television and movies started for me when I began taking classes for 3D, animation, texture painting, etc and has never really stopped since. I've only really been doing Arch-Vis my entire career which arguably is a simpler niche of CG, though I am pretty familiar with the other areas out of pure interest. I'm often noticing details in the way architectural structures, systems, and millwork are actually built. It's definitely not as demanding as character modeling, rigging, and animation, which there's no easy way around, but with arch-vis a lot of the times we're translating (faking?) those smaller details with textures or simplified geo because the actual detail won't often show up (or would make the scene too heavy) because the views are so vast. I also look at materials in the real world as reference and try to take mental notes of how certain characteristics appear like reflection levels, roughness, etc. at whatever time of day/lighting conditions it may be at the time. One could argue that 3D artists have a greater ability to see 'The Matrix'! ;) Sometimes I am almost convinced that we may actually be living in a complex computer simulation..but I digress. :)
