    whats up guys, so gonna be putting up some free models over the next few weeks, some older ones and some more recent ones, most of these are characters i've either never used or have recently updated, going to take me awhile to clean up and sort through them, but i'll post up some new ones when i can.     Wow...and I thought I was snarky!!! Okay. Let's accept it for what it is: Mr. McGarvan is on the Cafe. He is posting. That is huge and unprecedented. Now, unless he lives in his own private world of cognitive dissonance reserved for the truly self-absorbed, then it is a fair bet that he is quite aware of the level of frustration, loss of trust, and overall growing anger against MAXON's new policies. ....but he still bravely posted on the forums. Now, if any of you think that the months of development it took to put their licensing scheme into place, the investment in servers to support it, etc is going to be chucked aside simply because the majority of us are angry and thinking about Blender more than we are about R21...well...let's be realistic. It is going to take more than 3 years of lackluster sales for it to finally sink in with Nemetshek (because this was all their idea after all) that maybe they just screwed up a pretty good thing. But by then it will be too late. You see, we all see it coming. We are more attuned to what licensing means to the users because we are all users. Corporate execs are not users. They are a bit out-of-touch. If Adobe could get away with it (after incurring an initial loss of sales in year 1, breaking even in year 2 and a return to profitability in year 3), then why can't MAXON do it? That is how they think. But the Nemetshek execs do not realize that Adobe has a suite of 20 products to offer for $53/month that is billed MONTHLY. MAXON has two products billed at almost twice that amount (if you include Redshift) billed ANNUALLY. Whatever you may think of Adobe subscription plan, you have to admit that is a lot of capability. Plus they also offer cloud storage. Regardless of the pace of development at Adobe after licensing, you at least have a number of options with their Creative Cloud that you can afford on a smaller financial bite of $53 a month rather than $720 a year. So can you really take your marketing cues from Adobe with that type of offering? I mean really? Plus, MAXON announced their licensing plan on the back of R21 which has less new features than R17. Not sure if Mr. McGarvan was aware of the anger around R17. R17 forced the much respected founder of The Cafe, Nigel Doyle, to leave C4D,...that is how angry we all were with R17. Nigel just had the personal integrity (and foresight) to actually do something about it. And now, here we are with R21 which is even less compelling in terms of new features than R17 and on top of that you add licensing. I mean WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? Did the Oscar go to your head? Did you even bother to reach out to a cross section of your user base (both professional multi-seat houses AND individual users) to get some feedback? I mean, the simple fact that Prime MSA users can now get R21 Studio Perpetual license for $250 while Studio MSA users have to still pay $720 should have caused some recognition of the fact that loyal Studio users are getting the raw end of that deal. And please, don't tell me that the 20% discount on a two year subscription makes up for that because with that deal you loose your R21 perpetual license. I mean the execution of this whole licensing scheme was so poorly thought through that I have to imagine that there were some MAXON employee's who voiced concerns. If you didn't get feedback from your users...did you at least listen to your own employees??? So please, if you are going to be brave enough to take the heat on the Cafe, please step out of your own echo chamber and listen. Drag a few of those bean counting Nemetshek execs with you in the process. A few things for everyone to mull over if you really are going to listen: 1) Restore the perpetual license upgrade cost to $720. The disadvantage of perpetual licenses is that users have to wait a full year for updates and you want to the money all at once. The advantage is that we are not locked into a subscription fee to keep using the software. Seems like a fair trade. And don't lie to yourself and say "Paying $999 is what happens when we discontinued the MSA program". Tacking on another $279 is just unnecessarily punitive punishment for not going to subscriptions or just plain greedy. There is no other way for you to defend it so don't even try. That type of behavior is NOT in keeping with MAXON's past culture. 2) Charge monthly for a subscription rather than yearly. You can still have two plans: an annual commitment billed monthly at $60 and a monthly commitment billed at $89/month - but both are charged monthly. I mean what is the point of this whole licensing manager if your cannot monetize it with monthly billing? Miss a payment, the software shuts off and you have one month to get back on to the $60 plan monthly plan. If you miss that, you go to the monthly $89 plan until your original 12 month commitment plan is up for renewal. Advantage: users get interim updates and monthly billing. Again, fair trade for losing the right to use the program after the subscription payments stop. Both of these plans are far more attractive than what you are offering now. Why? Because they offer advantages to both MAXON AND the user. Right now, everything is weighted in MAXON's favor. Don't kid yourself to think that the users are not smart enough to see it....I mean why else would we be angry. But please do SOMETHING...ANYTHING that recognizes that the path you are on is not a successful one for MAXON. Again, we are here pleading with you because we do love the software but we fear for MAXON's future. Again, we all see it coming. You need to open your ears to what we are saying. Also...one more thing.....in case I still haven't gotten your attention yet and this post is just so much long winded chatter in your ears: Please point out to your bosses at Nemetshek that regardless of how precious and in love you are with your new core, that Blender 2.8 IS A SERIOUS THREAT THAT YOU CAN NOT IGNORE. They are getting some significant funding....they are capturing mind share with a loud chorus of approval for their new features that dwarfs whatever noise was made when C4D won an Oscar. Blender is production ready because Blender is used on productions (...so how many Netflix movies, series and shows are made with C4D?). Those new customers you are hoping via your "3D for the whole world" pitch are also looking at Blender. Don't kid yourself. They are looking at Blender 2.8. Blender is now more mainstream in its interface and if you are new to 3D then why would you choose a subscription program at $720 a year over a FREE program that has a pretty good interface, production proven character animation, modeling and sculpting tools, GPU rendering, a fast real time game rendering engine (Eevee) that gives tremendous view port performance, particles, compositing...the list goes on. As you deal with lackluster sales in 2019 and hope for a recovery in 2020, never forget that Blender gives us options. Please repeat that to yourself every day when you wake up: Blender gives us options! Is the hair standing up on the back of your neck yet? Still having fun? No? Well...then you better starting listening. Dave P.S. And let's not even think about the worst case scenario: Someone makes a motion graphics plugin for Blender....or Blender does its own mograph development. Blender has everything else....so why not? Honestly, C4D's future may not be as secure as you think.

    My beautiful wife works as a social worker at the juvenile court, and she uses the signs of safety-tool: the three houses. These three houses are a great way to talk to children about the good things in their lives, their worries and the dreams they have for the future. She made an example sketch for me, so I had a very good idea of what she wanted. I made a new sketch (below) because she really likes the old skool pencil-on-paper style. I thought it would be cool to make a 3d version of the house, so here it is!

    An open letter to MAXON CEO David McGavran David, I'm afraid we need to talk. I've came to Cinema 4D on r12. My first 3d program was 3ds Max, but a few years using it I felt it's stuck on evolution and I decided to move. Since then, Cinema 4D is my trusty and beloved home, the best piece of software I've got on my computer, the thing I rely on, my leaving and career relies on. I trusted it not only because of the features and quality it's got, but because the MAXON team's vision of the future, the attention they have to their work and management relation to community formed around. I was one of them when C4D was known as "not serious" amongst many 3d artists, I'm one of them now when it's (still) rocking 3d world. In recent years since MAXON announced the shift to a new core architecture a was waiting passionately to see it. Finally we stepped through the Rubicon and an unprecedented power uncovered to our vision, promising so many new things to expect! And now... Now it starts to seem like all that glory made by devs is going to crumble under a pressure of new freaking management approach. I know where you've came from, Dave. But the things Adobe did to their policy is the reason we leave, run away from them and try to substitute their products as much as possible as it's dangerous to rely on them nowadays. And the former MAXON relation to customer and the whole community on the other side are the reasons we adored this company and growingly loved Cinema 4D. I am SHOCKED to see these precursors of some very ugly changes to MAXON policy in recent time, this weak and humble evolvement of program in the last release, exactly in the such important point of it's history, when it shifts to top league, promising such a great functionality I'm afraid we would not see already. You could call me "headlong" for saying all of this, but nope - I saw such thing already (Canon, Apple, Adobe, Autodesk) and I have a distinct feeling of what's going on and what's coming next. Get me right, it's not personal (yet), you may be awesome in person, but where you start to lead us to - ISN'T WHERE WE WANT TO GO. And THERE IS a choice, and despite it would be a harsh shift like leaving a childhood home, we will shift if you keep it going. Not tomorrow, not in a year, but we will. Remember the death of "immortal" 3ds Max, you know what I'm talking about. I feel worrying for the YEARS AND YEARS of my hard work learning and mastering Cinema 4D. I feel worried for my entire career I relied on Cinema 4D. I feel the move you're taking is DISHONEST to us, the whole community, about like XSI murder by Autodesk felt. I, personally, considered subscription option, despite it's pretty pricey (but It's your right to set pricing, ok). But seeing the movement of recent time I opted not to. No because the release is weak for a major number, no - because I don't want to support the movement in that direction. I don't want MAXON to go there. You're clearly taking the Adobe route. They told us the same - "constant updates with no need to wait untill release will let us push more cutting-edge features right on your table, increasing development pace will push the boundaries of your possiblilities and creativivivity way beyond today's standards" and so on and so on. What did this spaghetti on our ears turned into? You know by yourself - sluggish, buggy, unreliable software, from release to release bringing NOTHING we needed, nothing we were asking for DECADES (as folders in AE timeline for instance). For the price many times more adequate, growing constantly with no reason. Subscription? This isn't the key. I'm glad it exists, despite it's pricey I think, but it's on your side. It's good there is an option, this isn't a problem. The problem is the whole approach you try to take. "The whole Cinema4D experience is moving into the modern online world" as MRalph said. Let's face it, "online" is simply lidicrous here. "Online" - is a steel wire you tie us to yourself. Adobe did so, and as a result - constant stream of money made them not a software developers, but rather a typical rentier. That is what you try to do to OUR world, right? Recently I wrote an extensive list of improvements for C4D, spending my working time and thoughts to have a chance to make it better. Because I love it and wish to it to evolve. And I was sure if I mail it to MAXON, I have a chance to be heard, as our goal is the same. Now I feel like soon there would be no one to listen to us. Not even considering that, just like Adobe does. Isn't it a right time to stop and take a step backwards, Dave?

    First time post on a forum but felt the need to. Happy user since R10 Studio with investment in most plug-ins for the software. (Over $20,000 NZ Dollars spent in that time.) Just a hobbyist with no income earned. (My choice). Was excited and looking forward to the "exciting / industry- changing news , and got up at 4.15 AM on a cold mid-winter morning to see that MAXON had lost its heart and soul and gone done the road of so many other corporates,only interested in money. The presentation was amateurish ..(didnt even start on time )..... and it didnt get better for those of us with a long term loyalty / commitment to C4D. Reluctantly spent $1200 renewing my MSA two weeks ago, thinking i would at least get a subscription to Cineversity. (but sadly the goalposts were shifted there as well ). The whole "big - announcement "thing has been deceitful, and has treated long term loyalty with contempt. Havent felt so deflated since Greyscale Gorilla tried to charge me again for software i had already bought and owned. Have spent two days in a daze trying to work out what it all means to me. The answer is, that any way i look at it i lose.The only winners are the lower participants on the eco-system and possibly new users ( which will only dumb down the fraternity). It has been a public -relations disaster from my point of view. Surely if you are going to take away with one hand , you give something back with the other hand to soften the blow ? It would have cost them nothing to offer Redshift at a discount to long-term loyal users. Tried hard to find something positive , as i have spent far too much time digesting all this. Have loved the journey up until a couple of days ago. Sadly MAXON has depreciated greatly in my estimation. I feel as if i have been "blind-sided" .... reluctantly, it may put me out of the game.

    For the past years I have been working on this solo project during my spare time. It took me way too long, because in between i lost interest, had paid jobs, scrutinized the story, scrutinized the characters, scrutinized my lifechoices etc. But eventually i was compelled to finish this short film because i had invested too much time to just drop this project. So here, I'd like to present you: SUNDAY, a story about a lonely penguin's quest for refreshment on a hot and sunny southpole sunday.

    Lots of ways to go about that, but I think this is probably the fastest... 1. Top view, poly pen in Quad Strip Mode, and draw yourself a network of polygons, like so... 2. Extrude that (with caps), and delete the end caps to get your tunnel ends... 3. Smooth Subdivide that to Level 4 or 5, then use a displacer deformer (make it a child of the object), driven by Luka noise to make it look rocky... It might look like a giant pretzel from the outside, but from inside we're approaching something cave-like... Don't forget to select all polys and Reverse your Normals at this point... You can add further displacements (in a group with the SDS Object) at smaller scales, and use that additional SDS to increase polycount much higher. Here I'm at a combined Subdivision to Level 7, and I've got Luka at 600% driving the bigger detail, and Electric Noise, 50%, stretched 500% on V for finer detail.... Lastly, you can handle smaller detail still with normal or bump maps in the material... talking of which, if you are using photo-based textures you want a nice Triplanar mapping setup to texture this properly, but you can do it equally well with just layered procedural noises... Lastly I should mention some techniques for making it look 'big'. These might include... Building in small holes to the tunnel roof to let beams of sunlight in, and using a plane in an Atom Array in front of your sunlight to further break it into godrays.. Adding some Physical Sky, not for its weather, but for its atmospherics haze... Using small area lights, with small illumination falloffs Park the camera very low, and use wide angles Hope that helps... CBR

    i've been recently experimenting a lot with cartoon sfx setups like water, fire, smoke, explosions and so on purely with mograph, fields and volumes. no particles, no plugins. most fun i've had in a while, also i'm quite impressed what can be done with just the on-board tools. just wanted so share those here too, since people seem to like them a lot on twitter, hope you'll like them as well. https://twitter.com/everfreshdesign

    I've been a MAXON / C4D customer for 19 years - and I couldn't agree more. It seems MAXON are now quite willing to penalise those with Studio MSA - who are much more likely to be locked in to the C4D ecosystem - in order to suck in new users. That's not an equitable way to treat your customers.

    Dumb question time. Why can't Cinema 4D have a perpetual licence with annual maintenance i.e. MSA then also a monthly / annual subscription plan for those that want to rent Cinema 4D / don't want the hefty outlay of buying a perpetual licence. Don't give me any BS that it can't be done. The Foundry offers both for Modo. Everyone is then happy.

    I really feel empty today and i lost trust in MAXON. I work with Cinema since 2001. First in different agencies and then on my own. As a MSA and Studio customer i feel i’m no longer valuable to MAXON. I’m fine with the money i spent for Cinema Studio and all the MSA fees until R20. Fantastic Software overall and perpetual license. Now i feel totally ripped off. This is why i feel this way. First of all i paid MSA for R21, and this release is poisoned with online activation. This is not what i expected and as a customer i feel they do not deliver what i paid for. This is not real perpetual. If in the future they choose to deactivate licenses which are a little bit behind. I can do nothing against it. MAXON forces me to make a bad decision, no matter what. 1. go subscription - I spent thousands of dollars to buy Studio and MSA. If i go subscription i will loose my perpetual license. This is crazy and this won’t happen. Please MAXON fix this. This is like you take away my car and tell me it’s better for me to rent i from you. I would consider subscription if i could fall back on R20/21. - all the subscriptions are adding up really fast. If at one point you have a bad time with your business,… well you’re out of the game. 2. stay with perpetual license We will see what the upgrade prices will be and how long the offer perpetual licenses. But with online activation it is no longer real perpetual. (see above) I have to carefully think what i will do. At the moment it looks like i am forced to stay with R19/R20 as long as i can install it on MAC OSX. But i got a bad feeling it might be locked out sooner than i like. I really love C4D and i make my money with it. I was fine with studio and MSA costs. no problem at all. But you are saying you don’t force us into subscription - well then don’t! When i look at the weak features in R21 and the new subscription model i got a strong feeling that you holding back features which could have been ready for R21. Just to release these features for subscribers this fall or winter and lure us in. I hope i am wrong and i hope MAXON will listen to our feedback. This is a bad day for me personally. I am invested in C4D with plugins, libraries and first and foremost with my heart.

    I was doing some paperwork, paying some bills, made a couple of invoices and thought: 'my god, my invoice looks superboring and plain!'. So I thought to make some characters and models related to money, invoices, etc. First idea was a 'moneywolf', here in Belgium / The Netherlands this term is used for someone who is always out for money, a greedy person. And what better job for a moneywolf then being an armored-cash-transport driver / guard! Made some progress screenshot along the way too, shows a bit how I started modeling this thing.

    I mean props to David for coming on here to face the music. But MAXON must know that from a permanent licence holder's point of view - we don't care what you choose to call the product 'MSA' or 'Upgrade' - if future upgrades are going to cost the current non-MSA price then we've just been smacked with a 30-40% price increase alongside a very slim release. This year was the normal price via MSA. But R22 will need to be 'bloody spectacular' to persude me to part with the best part of £1000. The company I work for (with about 10 seats of Cinema) are seriously evaluating Blender - mostly not because of the change in license structure but because Cinema is visibly creaking round the edges (dies at moderate object count). To be honest, if Blender cost the same as Cinema, we would still be evaluating it, just on it's own merits. But the fact that at least the license costs are zero is just extra incentive. MAXON need to be seriously careful - they couldn't have chosen a worse moment for aggresively de-valuing their offer to their core customers.

    Many people are disparaging MAXON's new CEO as some sort of "marketing guy from Adobe", but this is false, and unfair. His previous roles were all in engineering and engineering management, not in marketing, and he would in all likelihood not have been involved in Adobe's licensing changes over the last few years. Its fine to express all sorts of opinions about the changes in MAXON's licensing, but let's not resort to that kind of ad hom. It's not productive.

    Thank you for your feedback. I have been on here and other forums reading all the responses. I am someone who loves talking to customers. I will be at IBC and very happy to chat to anyone who comes by. I will also be at many of the European stops on our roadshow. I am not ever going to write long responses on forums, never seems to go well. I am here, I am reading and the team is as focused on working with our customers as ever. Hope we get to meet in person.     +1 A big part of what made the C4D community great was it's respect and trust for MAXON. I feel we are nothing more than a subscriber # to them now. A company that is user-focused would not implement such heavy handed policies.

    I just took a moment to slow down and look at the recently uploaded artwork that appears at the bottom of some of the Cafe pages. I wanted to give a shout out to all the artists that have posted work on this site that have such a wonderful gift! These artists set the bar at a level I can only dream of reaching someday. Your work makes me sad, happy, intrigued and sometimes question my own existence or purpose. You all wield the weapon of imagination to combat reality and demonstrate your ability to bring it to life. On top of this, many of you share your knowledge freely and that is appreciated by many, many, others. My hat's off to all of you and thank you for what you do!!!

    The other day my pc crashed with several apps open. C4D survived ok, but Photoshop had reverted to OOBE - welcome screen, load of panels I don't use etc. I tweaked PS back to how I like it and that was that. 2 days later I needed an image for C4D, so I opened PS and created a 1000px square doc, only to get an error message 'could not complete operation - disk full'. I looked in explorer and sure enough my SSD was bright red and completely full. I closed everything and ran virus check, and other stuff and the SSD went back to normal. I opened PS - disk full. This went on and on - problem kept appearing, disk full. Didn't Einstein say that repeating the same thing, expecting a different result is a sign of insanity ? On the 10th attempt, I opened PS, made a doc 1000 ... hold on 1000 INCHES ? The PS reset had set the default units to inches, and I was trying to create a doc 7,000 square feet. PS standard res is 300dpi, so pixel-wise I was out by a factor of 10^5. panic over...

    Hi guys! My 2 cents on the topic: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EMfgEuGXkAIr0tj?format=jpg&name=900x900 Besides the jokes, I think Cinema 4D is one of the greatest software that I have used and now is affordable even for my location. When I open Blender, all the navigation and stuff make me feel I got into LADA car (it is old soviet cars)it can drive you in every place but in the most uncomfortable way, when I use Maya, I feel like I am driving Alpha Romeo - beautiful but it breaks every 10 km., when I use 3Ds Max (my first 3d app) I am feeling I am in a tank - I have 2 handles for everything, when I use Houdini...well like I am in CERN, I am accelerating particles to make a cube, and I accidentally make a hypertorus packed with monkeys, which are consumed by the black hole that also accidentally appeared...I end up making the cube with real paper from the garbage in the post apocalypse world that I have created. when I use Nuke - I am using BMW, cool but too expensive and in the winter you don't go out with it... and when I use Cinema 4D - I am in a AUDI! Feels good and takes you where you want to go! The grass is not always greener on the other side!

    Just wanted to say that I realize that sometimes I and others in the forum come across as very critical of what MAXON does or does not do. I feel personally invested in MAXON and its software. I really care what happens with it so. I am very grateful to the developers and management in what they have been able to create over the years and I have enjoyed the software and it has helped me with my career and personal creative development. So thank you MAXON & Team for everything you guys do and please try not to take the criticism too personally, we speak up because we care.

    Hi all, I just wanted to let you know that I have released a new version of my free python script for C4D: NeuronBuild. This script allows a C4D user (there is also a separate version for ZBrush) to import neuron morphology data from NeuroMorpho.org. It creates realistic, accurate models that you can use in your illustrations and animations, either directly or as the basis for further modelling. There are more than 100,000 entries in the NeuroMorpho repository, across numerous species and cell types. You can learn more, and download the script at: https://github.com/NWoolridge/NeuronBuild A video on the new features is available at: https://vimeo.com/391015129 New in this Version: • I added options to put the model into a volume builder and volume mesher. This will simply create a single mesh that can be used for further modelling or to get better shaded results when rendering. NOTE: the resolution is set deliberately low, since the volume mesher could create many millions of polygons and potentially crash C4D if you are not careful. So, once the model is created, adjust the Voxel Size attribute of the Volume Builder object downward in increments until you are happy… • I added the ability to create a single spline object from all the dendrites, axons, etc. (and a single rail spline as well). This can be used as a proxy for the full model, or as a path for animations of signal impulses, or in a mospline object to create growth, etc. Right now these are created outside the main hierarchy, but I may want to change this... • I fixed an issue where astrocytes and other glia wouldn’t make a model. • I fixed some bugs where odd combinations of the options might create weird results Things to keep in mind: • The detail and dimensionality of NeuroMorpho entries varies significantly, depending upon the techniques used to collect the data. Some entries result in a relatively flat, or only minimally 3-dimensional, model; this may be because the neuron itself is largely planar in structure, or because the data was collected from a single view. If you are unhappy with the morphology of a cell you downloaded, try another! Please let me know if you have any issues, or would like things to work differently. Since it is open source, you can also contribute changes if you want! Best, Nick

    To answer a few questions. If you sell perpetual software with out a subscription or maintanence you can't by US law release brand new functionality. Feel free to read all the details by researching Sarbanes-Oxley law. Came out after Enron. So if you want to continuously offer new stuff you need to recognize the revenue over time in specific ways. It isn't an excuse it is a very very important thing to get correct in your accounting. That is why people talk about subscriptions as a way to give developers more flexibility to release stuff when it is done. Now, relative to Nodes and Redshift. We have a Nodes SDK ready that we have in r21 and have given to multiple developers, it won't be generally available for some time. Redshift has it working but there are some bugs they want fixed before they release it so it works better. We are working on fixing those bugs and then we will release it, current plan is soonish.     So far, someone from MAXON will gladly chime in to explain some aspect of the subscription plan. They will also chime in to defend the position that Prime MSA holders can get a Studio R21 license via their last MSA purchase for about 1/3 of what Studio users have to pay ($250 vs. $720). Their defense though again gravitates towards subscriptions: "that is why Studio users can get two years of subscriptions for a 20% discount". But what took literally a ton of emails to sort out was that if you should ever take that offer in the future, they will deactivate your perpetual licenses - in essence locking you into subscriptions. They were very shady in divulging that information and it took some robust dialogue and painfully direct questions to get them to finally answer it. Now, where MAXON is COMPLETELY silent is defending why we should accept a 50% increase in renewing their annual perpetual license over what they paid for via the MSA program. Not one word of explanation or spin as to how this is in our best interests. Maybe they can say "well we canceled the MSA program" and that is the price of an upgrade without the MSA program. So we really didn't raise prices, we just cancelled a program. But then defend this: WHY DID YOU CANCEL THE MSA PROGRAM? Well, there is no defense. The MSA program was cancelled because they want people dependent on paying annual subscriptions for the simple reason that a companies "appearance" of value increases with a re-occurring revenue stream. It is a great selling point during quarterly earnings reports to say that subscription revenue growth is increasing and makes up a large portion of their total revenue. So in Nemetsheck's and MAXON's eyes, their thinking is "hey, we will make the annual cost of a subscription the same as the old MSA price so users will eagerly switch over of a subscription model. While it won't increase revenue (this year), changing the source of that revenue to re-occurring revenue is a great message to our shareholders." So again, the benefit is all MAXON and there is no way anyone from MAXON can defend this position on a community forum in any way that users will accept. Shareholders love it, but we don't because it provides us no value -- so why defend it. They tried to put lipstick on this pig by selling it as "3D for the whole world". No. It is "higher stock price for Nemetschek" and don't ever forget that. Again, the only thing they will listen to is a drop in revenue beyond what they forecasted. Right now, we are all exercising our last MSA purchases. The true test will come with what we do with R22. Do we convert to subscription? Do we pay the higher perpetual costs? Do we go somewhere else? That is why R22 will be a critical for both MAXON and for us as well. And don't think for a second that subscription prices will remain the same over time. Trust me, once they have coerced a large portion of their user base to subscriptions, those prices will rise. Maybe not in huge jumps, but they will steadily go up. And now you are really stuck. There are no alternatives but to pay at that point. While I love the fact that we have this great participation from Mr. McGarvan in this discussion, our complaints will make no difference and will generate no discussion from MAXON.     Hi all, in many discussions about new Cinema 4D there comes the point where someone points out that this version is more of a .5 version than a full version. Since i was intimately involved in the development of all .5 versions i scratched my head and asked myself what could have prompted such a remark. This is what we delivered R 8.5 - Sketch & Toon, improved material manager, SLA shaders integrated and improved, SSS, Vector MB, new Radisoity mode, Post Effects as layers R 9.5 - Ambient Occlusion, Color Mapping, Physical Sky, New Content Browser, Area Lights, 32 Bit Rendering, improved baking, PS Layer support, improved particle effectors, Xpresso improvements, incremental saving, Normal Channel R 10.5 - XRefs, DWG, HUD, new modeling functions, interactive lighting, improved UV unwrapping, new Effectors, new Cloning options, substantial Hair speed up R 11.5 - MoGraph 2, NLA, New GI, BP R4, SPD, Render Instances, new Picturer Viewer, FBX export improvements i shortened the list since usually it was well over 100 items per release. Given that the last .5 version came out 10 years ago i think it is no wonder that many do not remember the actual scope of those releases. Also at the time we had the modul system. MoGraph for example was released based on 9.6 and never showed up as a new feature in any main release. In the end i think it was just the feeling that .5 must be less than 1 and the effects of the module system that decoupled a lot of major functionality from the core program.

    So doesn’t Blender do all this without plugins....for $0 per month or (if you don’t like subscriptions) or for $0 for the perpetual license. And you can either pay $0 a month or the slightly higher fee of $0 annually for the perpetual license as well. Unfortunately, the perpetual license needs to connect to the license server 0 times every 14 days to stay active. You just gotta love 0! Dave

    Welcome. I read all these posts and I am heartbroken and amused at the same time with the despair that many present. You are looking for conspiracies and dramatizing the situation. And yet everything is clear and obvious! So maybe I will help and explain in points. Everyone who has active MSA on September 1 will get a perpetual version of R21 + access to Cineversity - nothing changes here for MSA owners. The validity of access to Cineversity for MSA owners ends on the day the MSA expires. If someone wants to have access to Cineversity after this time and does not want a Cinema 4D subscription, they can buy independent access, as it is at the moment. MAXON plans special offers for MSA owners as MSA ends. These offers are not yet known. Anyone who has any version of Cinema 4D without MSA will be able to upgrade any version to perpetual R21 - that is, as it was, but there will be a bonus for owners of older versions of Cinema 4D who can upgrade to the perpetual version at a more attractive, the same price. From September 3, the R21 subscription will appear on the MyMaxon website for purchase in monthly (84.99 Euro net payable monthly) and annual (49.99 Euro net payable in advance = 599.88 Euro net) + mutations with RedShift. Anyone who has MSA (regardless of what Cinema 4D version they had before) will get perpetual R21 and will be able to have any number of subscriptions at the same time - one is not mutually exclusive. So you can, for example, buy a monthly or annual R21 subscription at the normal price and have a perpetual R21 all time - all on one account. During the MSA you can, but do not have to, convert your perpetual version to subscription. This conversion gives a 20% discount on subscriptions for two years, but you lose a perpetual R21 (this is a bundled transaction, the discount comes from somewhere). Then all previous versions up to R20 are still valid. There are people who have always bought MSA always wanting to have the latest version and have no attachment to the old versions, so it's attractive to them. When someone updates their MSA in August now, they are in a very good position. It has its perpetual R21 and can easily wait what MAXON will present next year in August. The prices of the perpetual update R21 to R22 will be known later, probably next year during the presentation of R22. Versions from R21 can be installed on any number of computers. You can remotely take over licenses - i.e. you go home and take over the license on a laptop. Licensing is checked every 14 days to make sure that someone under one license uses Cinema 4D on 10 computers. Since the R21 version there are no serial numbers, hence the plugins that required the number must be updated. Those that did not require a serial number will work. So to sum up. If you have active MSA in September, you get perpetual R21 + Cineversity. When MSA expires, you'll be able to continue using it and purchasing only Cineversity access. When R22 appears next year, you will be able to upgrade your perpetual R21 to perpetual R22 at the price announced next year. You will also be able to convert (if you have MSA active) your perpetual R21 in R22 and then in R23 with a 20% discount (but you lose the perpetual R21). You do not have to convert or upgrade your perpetual version but buy a subscription at a normal price, monthly or yearly. You stay with perpetual R21 and you have the R22 subscription. Everything that I wrote above is explained many times and on the MAXON website and on the forums, I do not understand what is incomprehensible to someone here. Personally, I am very happy with the subscription. It will be appreciated by everyone who has a company that is developing and when new jobs need to be prepared. It also gives you the chance to standardize different versions of Cinema and other older 3D programs in the company (e.g. Softimage). Thank you MAXON! :)

    It’s funny I’ve been doing this for so long I know how the meetings went… Actually, what is below is more brutally phrased, as this stuff it’s always parsed in nicer, more optimistic ways, but this sums it up. MBA Hack: “Don’t worry, we can keep our current users happy by giving them a “perpetual” license. At least for now.” MAXON staffer: “But they aren’t going to be thrilled by this news. And it really isn’t perpetual.” MBA Hack: “We know that, but its our job to sell this initiative - this is how it is going to be. So just keep those people calm until this gets fully implemented, We’ll put out the monthly price, It will seem cheap.” MAXON staffer: “But it’s the same price as an MSA was, maybe more. And it’s not really monthly, it’s annual” MBA Hack: “yes, but we’ll sell the hell out of the value and simplicity of it.” LATER… MAXON staffer: “I just got some user feedback online, it looks like there’s an insurrection with our base.” MBA Hack: “Well they are going to have to live with it, the decision’s been made, too late to change it. I’m sorry for them. Keep pushing the value proposition - we have perpetual for many of them now. Once the transition is over we’ll just make it more and more unacceptable to stay stuck in perpetual. Eventually most of them will have lost any resistance to the future. And in a year, If if they leave, then our new customers will more than make up for it in our revenue stream - it won’t matter if they leave then. This is a bright day for MAXON.” MAXON staffer: “I feel dirty” MBA Hack: “Look - this is the way it is. It’s set in stone. We can’t go backward. This will be the best for everyone. It’s… cost effective, a high level approach, a strategy initiative, robust, empowering, a win-win….” (etc, etc, etc. More MBA doublespeak… forever. (FWIW - have had to listen to this MBA nonsense for too long - there is a “Business Meeting Bingo” card that I always have up on long calls, good for (quiet) laughs - mute button helps too) So back to cases - Rick, I run a business. So what am I getting for loyalty? Loyalty is a real and valuable asset. I treat my longtime clients with special care. And MAXON is not so big that this doesn’t matter. Unfortunately McGavaran is still bathed in the corporate culture of Adobe - but C4D isn’t that monolithic, and won’t be. 3D is a niche product. It won’t be widely adopted like Photoshop. What are the longtime users really getting that makes this worth while to not jump ship now? I know it’s not your fault, you have your marching orders. But we need something rock solid within a month. Note: Maybe we all need to make our grievances clearly known higher up the food chain. I’m guessing we should be emailing those at the top, VP and above, and maybe even the suits at Nemeczek (sp?)

    Hi first post here Only a hobby user but joined because I want to join the discussion of the subscription bad new from MAXON. Anyway I actually have the Studio version since R16/17 with MSA. Haven't had the time to use Cinema as much as I wanted. I really don't buy the argument about people with restricted budgets now having the possibility to join Cinema because they can rent the software. First of all they could already get most of their needs covered in the more restricted versions and with a perpetual license. Second newcommers are actually allowed to put an amount aside each month and after some time they would have enough to buy a perpetual license. If you can afford a subscription you could save the money instead and buy the perpetual license afterwards. The subscription argument is only a cover up for changing thte license term to a monopolistic rental business model. where the customers are tied to paying each month forever. The subscription price can increase exponentially and even then a lot of users would not leave to start all over and learn another 3D program and loose the work they have made. This Adobe business model has the advantage for the company that the company can use a minimum effort in developing new features and in fixing bugs while they get a steady payment anyway. Instead they can increase their marketing budget to get more customers. I really can't see how this business model can be beneficial for existing or new customers.

    Just looked at the feature list - seems the subscription model and software programming to handle the licensing is what I paid for in my MSA! Yay! Someone said it feels 'snappier' when asked about improvement - that old joke isn't even funny anymore. I will be curious to see the geometry of two mesh objects when I run a boolean subtract on it. Will it still create a horrible mesh? That is the real test of these 'under the hood' improvements. I've been using this app forever and have held on expecting something amazing, usually there was at least one feature I liked every year - and a subscription service is NOT amazing to me. Maybe it is to management - and I think that's the problem, r21 is exciting for the MBAs and the people in accounting - they probably started dancing! The accountants got the features they wanted! The rest us us got code fixes in bevels! And an inability to own our software. Sorry but the feature list is pathetic. Now I own an MSA until next year and will get r21 in September (and will also get the gift of a boatload of broken plugins for my trouble - some may never work again because the developer won't update them, or is out of business or out of the game - so I will lose some capability for my trouble). I really don't want to have to learn a new app (ie MODO) as I have so much invested in C4D - but those of us who had Studio and were paying for an MSA are getting screwed hard. The car analogy is good, being told there are improvements to my car, like not owning it anymore - and that you need to have a wifi connection to start it. Accounting, management and the 3D dabbler have a win! The dabbler can now make AMAZING 3D text - just spellbinding 3D text. And I can make an intricate picture frame! Plus there are some features that allow you to make amazing spinning field patterns (stuff that no client will ever pay for) just what the masturbatory dabbler has been dreaming of. What a grand day for C4D.

    I started with R6. At that time Cinema was still a small fish in the pond but MAXON was good at catching up and implementing the most important features, sometimes better sometimes worse. For some years now I don’t feel Cinema is catching up with the competition. MAXON also seems to be aware of this and they justify the always rather subtle innovations with the fact that a new core is programmed, which then forms the basis for groundbreaking innovations. Unfortunately, the groundbreaking innovations seem to be a long time coming. And also the performance improvements, which one could have expected after renewing the core, are rather isolated solutions. Who is helped by a multi-instance if the real problem is a slow object manager? Instead, a lot of energy is put into diverse material systems and renderers that are of no use to anyone. Prorender was a mistake right from the start. It would have made much more sense to implement cycles. Long-time users are now rewarded with the ability to decide. Either they let the software they’ve spent a lot of money on get outdated, and enter a rental system that leaves them without access to their own files as soon as they leave. Or they do without Cineversity access and are at a disadvantage when it comes to updates. In addition, an online obligation is introduced, which in connection with the reduction of downloadable old versions actually forbids the term perpetual license. MAXON of course had to introduce a rental option from a business point of view, to reduce the entry threshold. There is no way around this after the unfortunate success of Adobe, . But, of course, they could have been more sensitive to their old customers. If the recently upgraded MSA had simply continued to run and a free Redshift license had been added, nobody would have complained. However, MAXON is now a subsidiary of Nemechek. And I’m afraid that’s where the problem lies. Profits that must have been made in the last 15 years were probably more likely to be skimmed off than to go into development, otherwise we would have noticed a faster development than 10 years ago. Of course, the employees and even the managing director of MAXON have little to do with that. No matter what MAXON’s intentions were. Those who have never owned Cinema can cheer. Those who have supported this company for many years pay the price.

    Dear Igor, with all due respect to you, David and the whole MAXON team, R21 and the whole communication around the new subscription model have both been very disappointing for a majority of existing users. We will all be paying more in the end, that's now very clear. And perpetual license users will lose benefits. 2 suggestions: -Keep the MSA scheme: 1 perpetual license subscription, no online activation. Full access to cineversity -Overhaul the annual subscription scheme: there is not enough there to justify the loss of a perpetual license for existing users. Add Redshift to the package and I'm sure people will be a lot more willing to opt in

    Going on a holiday in a few weeks, which gave me this idea: crappy things that could happen when you travel with the worst airline ever. Horrible ground crew, control tower that doesn't pay any attention at all, crappy taxi drivers, and so on. A lot of objects, vehicles and actually just one character, but with different outfits and assets. Also made up a name, logo and some great advertising posters.     For the hobbyist who has never made a dime off of the software, annual maintenance costs do add up but the beauty of maintenance over subscription is that you are actually "owning" something at the end. With subscriptions, what I was once paying for maintenance now just gets me a right-to-use for a limited time (1 year). As you don't own it, once you stop paying it goes away. I would imagine that most digital enthusiasts like myself probably have X-Particles or some other 3rd party renderer or any other plugin that has maintenance programs (DEM earth, etc). So when C4D was pre-subscription, you were paying $720 for C4D, around $300 for the Insydium maintenance programs, probably another $300 for your favorite 3rd Party Renderer, and you could easily set aside another $100 to $200 to support any new releases or updates from your favorite plugin developers. Plus, you probably are going to want to keep your hardware up-to-date and plunk down close to $3000 every 5 to 6 years for a new computer/monitor, etc. Therefore, for a hobbyist your annual costs to keep your software and hardware current come to easily ($720+300+300+200+$600) to over $2000. Do that for 10 years and it is like owning another car (we do keep our cars for 10 years). But with software under maintenance, every year it gets up-dated. Under a maintenance program, should you want to stop paying for maintenance, you leave the program with the latest and greatest of everything because everything still works. If you did 10 years on subscriptions and decided to leave, you have to go back and hope your last perpetual license from 10 years ago still works on your current OS or GPU. For any new plugins purchased over that 10 year period, there is no guarantee that they will work with your last perpetual license. In short, you are still paying the same amount as with maintenance plans, but should you leave a subscription program after an extended period of time you may not even have an old car to go back to...you could have nothing. So going on subscriptions in year 1 does not bother me....but I think long term. What if 10 years from now and thousands of dollars later I decide I can no longer afford this hobby. I then have nothing. That is what really scares me and that is what makes me think about leaving it all now and going to Blender. Yeah I lose all that time with training, etc. but why invest long term in something I feel financially locked in to. "Stop paying and it all goes away" - that's not a good feeling to have with something that is supposed to give you enjoyment. This is a hobby to me after all. I do love C4D. It is an awesome program in more ways than one and it is on a good trajectory. But so isn't Blender and Blender does not make me feel trapped. If there is any plan in the works that says "stay on subscriptions long enough and you won't leave empty handed", I would be all in as that is a win-win situation. But I don't think MAXON is thinking as long term as I am. Dave

    Okay....I am a hobbyist and not in the animation/DCC industry at all. But I do work for an extremely large global corporation that has also topped the list as one of the best places to work in the US and globally. As great as that company is (and it is a great place to work), there are politics where I work. NEWS FLASH: Work politics are EVERYWHERE! In many cases, people misread the "inner circles" that get formed around management as office politics. But in reality, inner circles are natural. "Inner circles" get formed because people naturally gravitate to those who they trust, have worked with in the past and who have proven themselves. No one can succeed alone and we all need help along the way. Those that help you become part of your inner circle. It is pure human nature to have them and not some part of a subversive clique that she makes out. So everyone has them. She just doesn't know how to identify them and navigate them successfully and that has to do with how you manage your career. If you manage you career poorly, then you will find yourself on the outside looking in because you have not become part of other people's "inner circles". So it comes down to how you manage your career. There are people that I mentor where I work and I tell them that every career has 3 main phases: Phase 1: Build your name brand. When people hear your name, how do you want to be thought of? Do you step up when asked? Do you step up without being asked? Do you get things done on time and meet your commitments. Do you focus more on the issue than on the personality (little minds talk about people, big minds talk about the issue). Can you be trusted? Are you kind and polite (that still counts). When you speak up, do you speak with facts or do you speak with emotion. People are more likely to misread emotion than misread facts and misreading emotion can hurt your name brand (in short, better to be quiet if your position is more emotionally driven than fact driven). Do you put the company first or do you put yourself first (trust me - people can spot the difference). Do you have other people's backs? If you can show that you are looking out for others more than just yourself, your name brand grows tremendously. No one get's promoted based on the recommendation of a single person. Usually, it is a peer discussion among the management team. I have been in those discussions trying to get my person promoted and as long as at least one other manager agrees with my assessment, then the promotion goes through. So worry about other teams as well. Build your name brand with integrity and hard work and pretty soon you will be part of other people's inner circles. The more inner circles you belong to, the more opportunity will come your way. Phase 1 requires you to "pay your dues" because it requires years of hard work. No one said it will be easy. Also be patient because no matter where you go, everyone pays their dues. Phase 2: You have paid your dues in Phase 1. You have built a name brand within your company you can be proud of. Now comes the phase when you can trade on that name brand to get where you want to be in your career. With each inner circle you have worked your way into with hard work, your network grows. Use that network to look for and/or ask for opportunity. Remember, you have proven yourself at this point. So now when you ask for what you want in your career, people will listen. But in that discussion, you don't demand. You don't threaten. You ask. The answer may be "no" but accept that answer with grace because doing otherwise would threaten your name brand. If you continue to preserve your name brand in this phase, your opportunity will come. Now, if all you hear is "no" then you must go back to Phase 1. But you may want to restart Phase 1 with another company. That is a tough choice but one that may need to be made. But before you make that decision, ask for honest feedback as to why you keep hearing "no". You could blame others for having to go back to Phase 1. That may make you feel better but it is more destructive than constructive. Better to "own it" --- use the experience, no matter how bad it was, to improve yourself. Experience is a hard teacher and simply blaming others does not help you get the most from a bad experience. Phase 3: Staying Relevant. If you thought Phase 1 and 2 were tough, they are nothing compared to Phase 3. You have built your career to where you want it to be but at some point it is going to stagnate. In Phase 1 and 2, you have developed some level of expertise that the company depends on but over time, things change. That expertise may no longer be relevant or can be obtain cheaper somewhere else. At this point, you may start to wonder about job security because being stagnant is never healthy to anyone. So it is here that must throw yourself completely out of your comfort zone. It can be a completely different role - one that you were not "officially" trained to do. You could also step up once again to take on a BHAG - Big Hairy Audacious Goal. Trust me, no matter what you choose to stay relevant, you will be drinking from the fire hose in this phase. If managed properly, it will be a period of tremendous growth where you prove to yourself and to others that you can do other things. It is also quite liberating once you get through it. But what you have done is proven to others that you are valuable, capable of taking on any assignment -- and therefore, still relevant. Note that throwing yourself out of your comfort zone is not a one time event in Phase 3. It is something you must continually do whenever you feel stagnant in this final phase of your career. So does any of this sound easy? NO! It is NOT easy. Success at any career requires hard work....tons of hard work in fact. That's why they people ask you what do you do for "work". It is called "work" for a reason. To expect anything else is setting yourself up for failure. To get back to this women's video, there is nothing she has said that is not unique to the animation industry or Disney. Even if you become self-employed, unless you are completely free of providing a service for others, there will always be politics and deadlines. So while she pursues her own business, if she has a client, then she is still not working for herself --- she is working for a client. Trust me, the politics of gathering and then working with clients will be no different than what she thinks she is running away from at Disney and building your name brand is more critical when you are self-employed.

    Interesting thread, all in all. I do believe, however, that C4D users are exceptionally happy with the program. Why? Because I see no evidence for the collective needs of the users, beyond everyday questions that do not require programming but can be solved with onboard tools. The category "Plugins Requests" on this very forum contains three entries, the newest being more than two months already. Let me repeat, three entries, on an international forum (which, I think, is one of the largest if not the largest for Cinema 4D). The category "Python/C++" is better off, but I am under the impression it is mostly used by people who are already programming by themselves and need a specific solution, not so much by end users who have an issue/request/need/suggestion. In the category "Market & Job Offers", I just went back ten pages (until 2018) without finding a single request for a programmer. Shouldn't there be a lively discussion on all those ideas which MAXON supposedly gets daily? If people have the impression that MAXON's forms are a black hole, why is nobody trying to involve the community? Sure, there are things only MAXON can solve (practically, or in an efficient way) - if a user needs to have a different behavior for a built-in function, then it might be impossible for a non-MAXON developer to provide a solution without re-inventing that tool from scratch. But very often a little code goes a long way. There are even programmers here on this forum who often will provide a little scripting solution for free (if reasonable) or for a nominal fee. And larger requests could be handled too, if users could agree on some financing system that would allow an independent non-MAXON programmer to create a new feature (something like plugins, but with less overhead and administrative stuff). True, programming is expensive (solving other people's problems is a job, after all), and as someone said in an earlier post, resources are limited, so it will generate extra expenses beyond the naked C4D, but for all those professional users who make a living with C4D (not necessarily hobbyists, for whom time and productivity is not so much of an issue), shouldn't the time and effort savings justify the money? Hey, couldn't several users with similar/the same needs band together and conspire to hire a programmer to alleviate their pains? I've yet to see that happen. All of that suggests that these needs are not that great, after all (the huge discussion on offline help seems more of an exception). Or the needs are so specific and task-oriented that there is only one user for it, or one job, which makes it really unlikely that MAXON will ever spend resources on it. Or, are they? It's hard to judge ideas if they stay hidden away in someone's brain. It's difficult to gauge interest without a discussion. It is pretty much impossible to estimate effort if the parameters of the desired functionality are unknown. So, summa summarum: Talk, people! Don't just put suggestions to MAXON, put them here as well. Discuss them extensively. Chat with a programmer. Propose a course of action. Make these ideas known! Don't be afraid of silly thoughts and seemingly impossible features. -- Maybe they will not be picked up; maybe they will not find enough support (yes, always that nasty money business); but if they do get out in the open, who knows what may happen.

    I do hope that they are still trying to sort out what the cost of perpetual upgrades are going to be because what I am hearing from MAXON USA representatives is that the cost of upgrading in the future will be as if your MSA program no longer existed. For example: Prior to 9/1/2019, the cost of an MSA was $725 and with that your got the next version. If you did NOT have an MSA, then the cost of upgrading to the next version has been $999. From 9/1/2019 onward, MSA's no longer exist. Therefore the cost to get the next upgrade will be $999. This has been clearly stated over and over again, so I have to assume that is the current policy that MAXON would like to stick to unless there is significant push back from the user community. In MAXON's mind, they are thinking "Well, if you want the same price then go with subscriptions". Subscriptions hold the user captive and free MAXON from the consequences of not releasing new features per any schedule. If you don't like the pace of development and stop paying the subscription price, then you can't use the program. Imagine if MAXON decided NOT to release R22 until 2021. Subscription users are essentially paying $1440 to keep using R21 over that 2 year period. Perpetual license holders of R21 pay only $999 over that same period. That is an extreme example, but you get the point...subscriptions free MAXON from the financial consequences of not delivering meaningful updates on a regular basis. Subscriptions are NOT to your advantage...they are to MAXON's advantage. Never forget that. So MAXON wants people to go to subscriptions or pay a 53% cost increase in perpetual upgrades (from $650 to $999 in less than 2 years). Either path is an advantage to MAXON....none to the user. No matter what type of crappy "3D for the whole world" spin you want to put on it, you need to realize that this is their agenda. It is an agenda that Nemetschek put in motion by forcing the founders out and hiring an Adobe transplant to execute. Disregard EVERYTHING that any corporate shill from MAXON tells you....it is greed, plain and simple. This is a different MAXON. Well, there should be consequences to treating your user base this way and that is what MAXON is going to try an gauge over the next year. What MAXON has yet to figure out is what will every MSA user who upgraded to R21 perpetual will do when R22 comes out when faced with a $999 cost to continue being a perpetual license holder. Yeah, Prime MSA holders are dancing in the streets over getting R21 Studio for $250 today but what they have yet to realize is that their annual costs increase 400% to $999 if they want to keep using R22 perpetual. Even if they decide on subscriptions, that is close to a 300% increase in their annual costs (and again close to 400% if you use Redshift). So again, if MAXON is still "taking their cues from the user-base" concerning perpetual upgrades, they are in fact wondering two things: "Will we get away with a massive price increase on perpetual license sales to pretty much everyone when R22 comes out?" "Will everyone instead move to subscriptions which gives us all the power in deciding how to release new features?" So despite what everyone is talking about, the line in the sand is not today (9/1/2019) but rather whenever R22 is released. That will be the big decision point for everyone because right now life is normal...we are all under the MSA program one last time and paying what we paid in the past. The big decision point is next year and that is why MAXON is listening to us today. So my hope is that a 61 page thread of rage over the "new" MAXON makes them realize that the users are NOT going to take this quietly. I hope MAXON steps out of their echo chamber and listens to our disappointment in them as a company that we trusted for decades. I hope they feel the silent pull that Blender R2.8 is having on us as users and drop their arrogance over the purity of their new core and recognize that Blender has some pretty good features that C4D does not have...and they have them for FREE! The new Blender interface lowers the learning curve significantly so that just makes a decision to forego a future with MAXON that much easier. I hope MAXON takes to heart that the Blender Organization gives us something that the MAXON organization is trying to take away: Freedom from incurring significant financial consequences when deciding how we want to use the program. So if MAXON is truly listening, then let your voice be heard over the next year. Dave

    what's up guys, jeeze feels like forever since i uploaded a wip project, life gets in the way some times but this is what ive been working on today, found an old helmet i started a few years back and decided to start over and develop it from there, more to come soon :D

    Interesting that for the last couple of pages in this thread, the major theme has been "so exactly what my options if I want to stay perpetual?" Amidst all that confusion, there have been NO posts from any MAXON employee. We have not even heard from those employee's who run the forum (Igor last posted over 140 messages ago). Maybe they are waiting for us to pass through the "storming" phase of change and calm down and enter the "norming" or acceptance phase of change before they show themselves again. After all, we have more in common with an angry mob this week than the once peaceful lovers of C4D we used to be last week. Heck, if I were them, I would stay away. So....confusion reigns....tempers flare (including mine)....and MAXON is silent. But maybe...just maybe....our reaction just took them by surprise. They initially faced the angry mob and tried to defend MAXON's position that subscriptions are great for "THE WHOLE WORLD" but the arguments kept coming - and when you do the math, they had nothing to defend themselves. They drank the cool-aid that subscriptions were just soooo game changing and soo amazing because it allowed everyone to get Studio. Images of THE WHOLE WORLD using C4D Studio were just too exciting for them to ignore. In that daze of 3D utopia that had been created at MAXON, they failed to realize that their existing customers, in particular their Studio customers, were NOT THE WHOLE WORLD. We are the ones being cast aside, being asked to pay more than others to get the very same thing. We were simply left behind. Never in their good-hearted imagination (and they do have good hearts) did it occur to them that to independent Studio owners, their entire proposal and rules on subscriptions and perpetual licenses makes them - in fact - look like Adobe. This has to be a shock to them because for years we kept asking "Will MAXON become like Adobe" and for years we heard the uniform cry in return "MAXON will never be like Adobe". Well....they have become Adobe. They didn't know it but they did....and it shocks them to their very core. "We were the good guys" they are saying to one another in surprise as the dream of "3D for the Whole world" starts to collapse on them for the money making sham it really is. "How did we let this happen?" they ask in disbelief. They now realize that they have also lost something as well in this whole debacle. Their passions and values for Cinema 4D were once lock step in-tune with those of their customers - making C4D the most fun, stable and easy to use DCC software out there. But now our values are different. We are no longer excited about C4D. We could care less about C4D Live. As we try to navigate the mis-information concerning our options for our perpetual licenses, we are in reality thinking more about leaving C4D than continuing the journey. We just need all the facts before we make one final decision. That is what happens when trust is lost...what you once loved quickly becomes something you despise. I would imagine that to hear that drum beat for 31 pages can be a little distressing to MAXON employees. So our good friends at MAXON, who once celebrated with us over R20 one year ago, have now gone silent. Maybe...just maybe, this realization is also making them face some changes about what they once believed in. Maybe...just maybe....they are doing some "storming" of their own. So my sincere hope is this: Their silence implies that our anger has been felt. That it is being discussed. That they are looking to management to guide them...and us...to an acceptable middle ground were we all benefit, where we are all comfortable with the licensing changes that MAXON has introduced. That no one, especially the independent Studio owner and hobbyist who has poured so much time and money into this software, is left behind. Maybe...just maybe...they are busily trying to develop a unified plan and message where we are all made whole again. Mabye....just maybe that is my hope. ...but hope is a bad strategy and we need to be real.... ...and MAXON needs to restore our trust. Dave

    For those who don’t know, this is how the process of hiring a freelancer goes. What follows is just my meandering experience and observation, your mileage may vary. Pretend you have a project. Lets say you need someone to design a Dinosaur character. First you will think if you know anyone. If you do, you will reach out to them. Then you will ask your friends, or freelancers that work for you if they know anyone. Then you’ll go to art station or some other portfolio site, or maybe straight to google and type in “Dinosaur character designer”, you will reach out to some of the people that you like, ask them their rates, and then if they are all too expensive you will go to fiver or upwork or freelancer.com or whatever other freelancing website exists. Nobody goes straight to a freelancing website, it’s usually a last resort. And it’s a last resort for people with small budgets. Because with the internet the way it is you can always find someone who does whatever it is you need to be done. Try it, try to hire someone who does what you do. I remember when i was just starting out there was this guy at a studio i worked at who kept giving me After effects jobs. I could do them, i had the skills, but it wasn’t really my specialty, i was always a 3D guy. That’s what i did well, thats why i charged more. In after effects i worked slower than most people and really wasn’t that good. But yet this guy just kept giving me after effects jobs. So one day i asked him: “why do you keep giving me these jobs? I’ m sure there is someone who does this better than me, and cheaper” and his answer really changed the way i think about everything, he said “Because i like drinking with you, and if you have more jobs, we can go drink together more”. At first i was like: “awesome”, but then it dawned on me, how many jobs do i miss out on, because someone likes to drink with someone else, or plays golf with them, or has kids go to the same school. It has so much less to do with how good i am at what i do than i thought. To me it was a revelation. So what do I do if I don’t know anyone who would hire me? You get to know them or you get known. My career was largely built on alcoholism. Especially when i was in New York. People all over the place drinking making friends socializing, exchanging business cards inviting each other to other events. And there is no faster way to get to know a person than drinking with them ( if you want a guide on how to properly drink leave a comment, it’s also a skill that takes time to develop). Alternatively go to events that either related to your industry, or if they don’t have them in your area, go to networking events for other industries, you might find clients there. I knew people who bought shares in mining companies ( just whatever the minimal was) and then turned up to share holding meetings and made friends and then got jobs out of that. Don’t like drinking? Get ready to do A LOT of work. Because building relationships with people is a very slow process if there is no alcohol involved, there are exceptional people which can make friends with anyone anywhere with everyone sober, but if you were one of those people you probably wouldn’t need help getting a job. So you have to start making a TONNE of work, and i mean a metric tonne. Start off with just volume, do a daily challenge. Post it on instagram, twitter, facebook, any platform that will let you. You have to get as many eyeballs on your work as possible. And it better be thematic, because people got to remember you for something specific. “oh i know a guy who makes dinosaurs” or “oh that guy who animates cars”. And you got to start posting it like CRAZY. For every 100 things you post, you might get one job out of it. This is not for the faint of heart. Which makes it even more important to pick a topic that you LOVE, because no matter what you pick, there will be people who LOVE doing that specific thing, and you will be competing with those people who will do it better and probably cheaper than you. Then go onto forums/facebook groups and start helping people, start answering questions, start figuring out problems other people are having, giving advice where people ask for it. Join the community. But don’t just post random comments actually participate, this is yet another way for people to get to know you. Also don’t forget to put together a proper website, you want a little piece of the Internet that is completely under you control. Go check out my article about small bussiness. It goes over how to set up a website rather quickly and what parts you need. Your website should convey to the visitor what you are good at and what kind of work you want to do as quickly as possible. Reels shouldn’t be longer than 1 minute, the shorter the better. Put your best work up top. Freelancing websites are really the last resort in most cases, they have the lowest paying clients and the jobs that no one else wants to take on. I know programmers seem to do okay on them. But creative tasks are just terrible. The most important thing to remember, that because this is hard to do, is the reason you will stand out.     After the gold and fluttery-ness of my Golden Snitch, it seemed only logical to do a Quaffle next - I seem to be doing the set. In fact these Quidditch guys are great for an ongoing personal project in that if you don't have much time you can always just spend a free night doing 1 type of ball, and then come back to it later to add to the set... Still working on textures, but off to a fairly decent start... this one was Physical Render /GI - 3 mins. CBR

    Folks that are speculating here and via pm, here is a simple answer. Adobe is not buying Maxon - simple as that. Not sure how on earth can anyone conclude that given this development? This, if anything nullifies such assumptions... If Adobe ever wanted this then probably good time for them was 10 years ago, certainly not now, and to best of my knowledge, and I was saying this every year when this comes up - C4D is not for sale. It is simply silly for Nemetschek to sell such a valuable and growing company. Anyone can find financial results of companies online, this is simply publicly available information. Now, I am looking forward to open some accounts for Redshift folks ;)
