  4. C4D or 3DS Max? (modelling)

    Many folks have moved to Modo for its modelling tools. It would be my 3d app of choice, as a modeller. Second spot - 3ds max and 3rd spot - c4d with HB bundle.

    @Jaehyuk increase GI quality by: increasing subdivision, lowering samples size @spiralstairOP didn't mention which version he's using. He could be on older version.

    Doesn't have to be the shadow causing this, if you mean the issue under the eyelid. Are you using GI? Try icreasing samples or different GI mode, for example BRLC with high settings. Adaptive DMC sampler, Treshold is by default set to 0.01, try even smaller number like .007

    Try turning on "Tile" on the material tag, which gives you the error.
  8. Dense fog/haze

    Z depth pass might be helpful if plan to add fog in AE/PS. Otherwise, the replies above are what you're looking for.

  11. Workflow of making a shoreline

    As RF doesn't have a sand simulation like the one we can see in the video, I would vouch for Houdini. It has both fluid & sand sim, though I'm not sure to what level of detail it can be used.
  12. Lighting at Night

    Real world picture of what you're going after could be useful, although yes, omni lights for street lighting and area lights for shining windows could be fine. You can always use sunny day hdri with decreased exposure if you like.

    I would make transparent text in PS and then load the texture into c4d material and apply to a torus object. Set mapping to UV, play with the offset and scale. Make sure the proportions are the same on both U,V, this shouldn't deform the text. Split the project into 2 parts (renders) as for back side and front side. Finally merge the 2 in PS.

    3D rocks models are freely available if you just use google search. They mostly come in 3ds/obj formats, which are painless to import to c4d. Some of the finest pre-made rocks I could find come from Quixel Megascans and they also offer free samples with mapped textures. For custom rocks of any size and shape, I would use Vue from e-on software. It's the best 3d app for landscapes. If you are struggling with terrain creation you can use DEM earth plugin for realistic terrain elevations.

    Corona is the simplest 3rd party plugin for c4d I know. Plenty of useful stuff on their blog, for instance: corona-renderer.com/blog/making-of-corona-sample-c4d-interior This author was generous enough to share a .c4d file and I find it helpful.

    I remember the first time I saw this technique was a light bulb modelling tutorial. Not even a videotutorial, but a text with screens. Sure works for bottle too.
  19. Advice on Recruiting Modelers

    You shouldn't be afraid to have people work for you remotely. Few months ago, I did exactly this. We were group of 6 3d artists + coordinator (aka the boss) working on a 3d gig. Communication was no big deal, we had conferences on skype on a weekly basis along with classic chat communication. Now managing 2 people online is I believe manageable, but it's your choice to have them relocated, if you can offer competitive salary. I don't know how much inhouse studio competition you have in the US to attract the right people.

    Is this made using atom array? You can do so by flattening the original object. Select the object and use the scale tool.

    Looks like a good start. Now only make holes towards the middle and not on the surface. SD modelling could give better result as the holes are not perfectly spherical but rather squashed and metaball-ish...

    1. Color shouldn't be set to 100% because you're not giving reflectance a shot. Try to set color between 25-40%. 2. Spend time to find a nice hdri/exr map. Look in the C4D content browser or search on the internet.
  23. Alpha / Transparency

    You want transparent material like glass and you are loading the transition into alpha? I would load it into transparency only. Try to simplify your material as much as possible. That way, it is easier for you to solve the problem.
  24. Difficulties in matching perspective

    You can be easily tricked by the isolated machinery and no horizon lines. My best bet would be to "eyeball" it, instead of using calibrator. See the setup below. Worked for me in many cases like this. You can trust 35mm lens as per photo. Rotate and zoom your camera until the viewport fits your model. File.c4d
