  1. I'm setting up a particle system that will be repurposed in multiple places, so I created a Null with a lot of user data elements as a master control for the scene, and linked those user data nodes up to the various controlled nodes via Xpresso. For some reason one of my controls (particle lifespan) is being multiplied by 30 when it goes to the actual particle lifespan, so I wanted to delete and reconnect the expression and hopefully get it back to a one-to-one relationship, or at least see where this 30x is coming from. The problem is that I am unable to go back and view or remove those connections after the fact. Clicking on any of the nodes/revealing any of the ports doesn't show the wires, and even manually (re?)connecting them and then breaking that wire isn't changing anything. How can I get Xpresso to show me all active connections--the equivalent of "Graph Input and Output Connections" in Maya's Node Editor? I want to look deeper under the hood than it seems to want to let me, or at the very least break this one connection. There is a lot hooked up in the scene, so going back and recreating the emitter and all connections is not an efficient workaround. Trying to learn to fish, rather than to throw a rock at some fish and hope the expressions work.

Epiphany right after posting, putting up my successful resolution in case anyone else runs into this-- I went to the new/cleaned up scene, deleted everything except the character, and saved it as a new file. I went into my project file and did a Merge Object. I thought that worked the same as copy/paste, but apparently it will succeed where c/p fails.
  3. Stupid question du jour . . . . In a nutshell, when I copy a character from one file to another the first 2,000 frames of her animation aren't copying, they just disappear. I'm on a project that has a 4,000+-frame mocap track, parts of which are being used by different scenes. I'm working on the segment that uses frames 0 - 2,000. The final mocap was cleaned up for the segment using frame 2,200 - end. (Although the whole range was cleaned up, that was just the file in which they were doing the cleanup.) I have to bring in the final cleaned animation (from the entire sequence, but focused on frames 2,200-on) into the file I had been working on (fr 0 - 2,000). Other than the nudging necessary for cleanup, the mocap in the new and old scenes still match--frame 652 in the first still corresponds with frame 652 in the cleaned up (and 350 = 350, 1,100 = 1,100, etc.) for instance. However, when I copy the character from the cleaned up file and paste her into my working file, the pasted version doesn't copy the first 2K-odd frames--it just starts where that new section starts, so the new character on my frame 2 is doing what she was doing at frame 2,002 (or so) in the file I was copying from. Any idea how I can get the new character to copy cleanly into the old file, so the timeline doesn't lose 2,000 frames? I edited the render settings in the new file to match the old (fr 0 - 2,000). I even tried moving the copied version around in the dope sheet on the old file, but those 2000 frames just don't exist--it's not like they're hiding before the 0 and I can just slide them. The only weirdness with the new file (which I don't think should make a difference here) is that the render resolution and aspect ratio were different. It was also 29.97 fps instead of 30, but I tried it both changing that and not changing that to no avail. I'm sure there's an obvious setting somewhere I'm missing. Thanks for any help.

Hi, all--I'm returning to C4D after a while away and am trying to figure out how I can animate the end growth of a seep nurb based on the position of a null moving on an identical path (but not the same path, due to its creation). The source is mocap. I PSR-constrained nulls to joints for which I want to generate trails (to be used for text alignment, eventuallly). I baked the nulls and converted those Position tracks to splines. I can use those splines for text alignment or sweeping with arbitrary end-growth animation , easy, but what I want to do is have the end point of the sweep to move based on the movement of one of the nulls (baked or not). (I'm going to do this (1) to create a boolean to reveal what's aligned to the spline, and (2) see the splines drawn on while previs-ing.) They're obviously following an identical path, but the motion timing is irregular because of mocap, so I can't simply align them to the spline path and animate beginning/end points. All my Googling has come to naught. I figured that since there is a spline vertex per frame, animating the growth (with a linear tangent) from 0 - 100 along the frame range would match up, due to quicker frame movements consequently having greater distance between corresponding vertices, but this isn't working like I'd hoped. I've been away a while, but XPresso/expressions don't scare me, and I assume the answer is there. Perhaps identifying the world space coordinates of the "driver" null that will drive the end growth, applying those coordinates to the spline, and then determining at what percentage of the spline that coordinate appears? Or could I align another null to the spline and simultaneously P-constrain it to the source null, so it follows the source but slides along the spline, and I can use that align-to-spline percentage to drive the sweep end? Thanks so much for any help!

  6. I've got a trial of C4D up and running on my Windows 10 PC, but am unable to use my Intuos Pro with it. It seems to read the pen as being 1/2" to the left of where it actually is--for me to click a menu option, create an object/deformer, whatever, I actually have to click in column to the right of what I want. I did Googling, but never found mention of this actual problem. I'm using the latest C4D with the newest Wacom drivers. A few solutions from 2011 mentioned using older Wacom drivers, but, since my tablet works great with literally every other program I use (Maya, ZBrush, Nuke, Houdini, all Adobe CC), I assume that's an outdated (and untenable) solution. I DID click "tablet" under Input Devices in the preferences. I have also tried adjusting mapping so it only sees one monitor at a time, and that didn't help. Any help is appreciated. I assume that this program is widely used enough so that there is an easy fix somewhere. (That's not using older drivers--that's not practical.)
