  1. Points to circle

Here's a simple script that takes a selection of points and arranges them into a circle. Also works in edge and polygon mode. Make sure you only select the outer elements i.e. select a ring of points. if you don't do this, the plugin won't work.
Copy the script into your scripts folder which you access via the Script menu on the toolbar. Restart C4D and you'll find the script in the Script menu. Do your selection then run the script. Resize the circle of points, edges or polygons using the scale tool. You can change the default size of the circle by editing the script.

  2. Getting started with materials

Here's a 2 hour long tutorial for beginners on how to apply materials. Topics covered:
    Creating and applying materials
    Restricting materials using selection tags
Using built in selections on Extrude objects
How to use a Sky object with HDRI to make metals look like metals
    Copying and pasting channels
    Where to find material presets
How to increase viewport display quality of materials
The video finishes up with 3DKiwi playing around with the Bump Channel then the Displacement channel to make a realistic stone floor
If you're new to Cinema 4D this is the first materials tutorial that you should watch. Once you've watched this one, also check out our

  3. The Connect Object

Here's a 17min 50 sec tutorial on using the Connect object. The Connect object is used to connect / weld edges together while still keeping the source objects as separate objects. The tutorial starts off with 2 simple examples one with MoGraph and then finishes with a more advanced and practical example where a loud speaker is animated with the MoGraph Sound Effector. The Connect Object is used to keep the vibrating cone part attached to the rigid frame. Although I use MoGraph in 2 examples the Connect Object can be used just as I demonstrated in the first example without MoGraph.

  4. Creating Round Holes & Extrusions

Here's an epic 65 minute tutorial where 3DKiwi demonstrates various methods of creating smooth round holes or smooth round extrusions on objects.
    Covered:
    Simple hole in 4 polygons
Why using Booleans isn't a good idea
Holes and extrusions by copying in a disc object. Hard surface version and Subdivision surface variations demonstrated. Shrinkwrap deformer required. At the end of the tutorial 3DKiwi briefly demonstrates creating holes and extrusions with the "Make a hole" script by Sandi Dolsak, Cylinder to Cylinder II plugin by Jurgen Meier and a Nurbs version using MoI 2 and then exported into Cinema 4D.
Note: Instead of deleting polygons and then doing a Boundary Loop selection to find out how many edges there are a quicker way is to select the Polygons then do a "Select Boundary Outline" command. Hotkeys U~Q

You will be able to download the original high res version rather than watching the low quality streaming version. The Points to hole script is available to download. Just click on the download button and you'll have an option to download it and or the tutorial.

  6. R12 Dynamics

This is a 65 minute video tutorial of 3DKiwi playing around with some of the new dynamics toys in Release 12.

Since the videos contain a lot of things moving plus use a higher frame rate than normal the videos are large. To assist members the tutorial is split into 2 parts. Part 2 shows how to do the dynamics for some simple cars including how to use motors and suspension. Also included are the scene files created in the tutorials.

Download and extract the zip files. Play the mp4 video files with any video player that supports mp4's.

  7. Morphing with TP (PBlurp Node)

With Thinking Particles it's easy to dissolve one object into particles and give the illusion of the particles morphing into another object. Can even be used on complex objects. The tutorial shows how morph between multiple objects and also how to use null objects to make the particles look as though they are following a spline path.

  9. Animating a Piston & Crankshaft

Here's a 11 minute tutorial on how to animate a piston, conrod and crankshaft. This is a follow up tutorial to the valve, camshaft and valve spring tutorial. Rather than using complex maths the technique used in the tutorial consists of very simple XPresso, a Constraint tag and a Target tag.

  10. Animated Text using MoSpline

Here's a 40 minute tutorial on how animate text being written as per our R11.5 review (no longer on-line). MoGraph's MoSpline object is used at the very end of the tutorial to add the swirly bits so even if you don't have the Broadcast or Studio edition you can get something very similar just using the core version of C4D. The bulk of the tutorial is how to prepare the text spline.

  11. Making a texture stick to clones

Here's a mini tutorial on how to make a texture stick to clones so that when the clones move around the texture goes with the clones. Recorded in R10.5 but users of newer versions should be able to follow along without too many problems. Included is the scene file and cafe logo in psd format. The psd image includes a built in alpha channel. If you don't want the black part of the image visible on the clone then enable the alpha channel and load in the psd image into the alpha channel of the material.

  13. Jigsaw Animation using Fracture object

Here's a 20 minute tutorial on creating a Jigsaw Puzzle animation using a Fracture Object. The tutorial is recorded using R12. Users of newer versions should be able to follow along without too many problems.

The tutorial covers extruding the puzzle splines, setting up the Fracture object, getting around the problem of the material slipping on the pieces. The tutorial shows 2 ways to animate the pieces, first with a Random Effector and secondly with Dynamics.

I didn't mention in the tutorial but if you are using Dynamics instead of the Fracture Object you don't actually need the Fracture object. The Fracture Object is only required if you are using MoGraph Effectors.

  15. Dice Modelling

Here's a 1 hour 35 minute tutorial on how to model rounded style Dice using Subdivision surfaces. Although the tutorial is recorded using R16, users of earlier versions will be able to follow along as none of the newer modelling tools are used. At the end of the tutorial there's a short section on applying materials. Because of the changes to the material system in R16 I show doing the materials in both R15 and R16. Only very simple materials are used as this is a modelling tutorial.

  18. MoGraph - Playing with Invisibility

Here's a 8 minute video of me playing around with MoGraph and making clones invisible. Not really a tutorial more of an appetiser for members to go and have a play themselves. Sometimes when using MoGraph you don't actually want the clones to move, scale or rotate but just want them hidden or unhidden. The video shows how to do it.
The zip includes the scene file from the animation like in animated gif above.

  21. Subsurface Scattering

Here's a 15 minute introductory tutorial on using the new SSS (Subsurface Scattering) Shader in Release 13.
In this tutorial 3DKiwi digs out an old scene using the old SSS shader and tries to improve the rendered result (without success). He then moves on to copying the model and lights into a new scene and this time uses the new SSS shader and plays around with the presents and render settings. The improvement from the old SSS Shader to the new one is nothing short of stellar.

  23. Animated Torus Rings

Here's a short 10 minute informal tutorial in response to a question asked in the forums at C4D Cafe. One of our members posted a video with animated rings in the form of a torus and asked how to do it with Cinema 4D.
The tutorial shows how to create the torus, create the material using gradients in both the Colour and Alpha channels. How to animate the rings moving then how to skew the rings to make them appear to be a long continuous helix line.
The tutorial is recorded with Release 16 but users of older versions should be able to follow along without any problems.
This tutorial is hosted on Vimeo. Clicking on the download button will take you there. You will be able to download the original high res version rather than watching the low quality streaming version.

  24. Jigsaw Sphere

Here's a clever little file that uses an imported Illustrator file to make jigsaw puzzle pieces. A wrap deformer is used to wrap the puzzle into a sphere. To work with the model you'll need to disable the extrudenurbs object otherwise your CPU may bog down. To get the broken look just start deleting the individual splines.

The original puzzle splines were from a very old R5 tutorial that I had lying around for years - 3DKiwi
