  1. Thanks @DasFrodo! @Cerbera is depth of field not a generic feature of C4D or is it only Octane? Sorry! For what it’s worth when I’ve posted in that category no one answers :/ and the only other octane forum I’ve found from OTOY takes like 5 days to get an answer. Maybe I have chosen the wrong renderer!
  2. Hello there! I'm working to add some depth of field to a neuron animation for the first time and it keeps coming out where the focus regularly and dramatically changes. Here is an example : Here are my camera settings - increasing the Fstop reduced but didn't fix the problem. I am using octane but posting in general rendering as this is a generic issue.   4. Damn. It might be possible to generate a 3D cube filled with the volume. If we could do that then could I use the subtract modifier to melt it? Each of the images is effectively a plane with xyz coords - maybe I could use a script to hide them in sequence?
  5. You’re correct - I do have a model of the thing to be revealed. We also have the “brain volume” for it to be revealed from, that is the 30k images. Here’s A short version of the scroll. The image in #2 here is maybe a good example of the images stacking into a volume from which we map neurons. The raw images don’t really have a background persay, they are all greyscale. Could we export them as a video and put that in a cube?
  6. Thank you @Cerbera! I’m still confused on how to make the cube show our real microscope images. In the case of the bigger neurons I’m trying to show (see attached image) the cube is a stack of something like 30,000 images. So when it melts away the top of the cube effectively reveals a scroll throug a cross-sectional electron microscope image and the sides would be the edge of our dataset, which is a little more jagged than perfect cube. So would I just take the 30K images and put them under Volume Builder then use Subtract?
  7. Hi all, I am not sure where to post this.. Our neuroscience lab maps 3D neurons. I am trying to make an animation like the beginning of this (from our old designer who worked in Max) that shows a dataset (stack of pngs or video file) that “melts away” to reveal neurons that have grown within it. Is this possible in Cinema 4D? I’ve so far only imported 3D neuron models, which render nicely, but the professor wants one showing the volume of brain it came from and I am totally stuck.   9. Hi, I'm trying to get particles to bounce off of a neuron from our lab. In stead they float right through it. Things I've tried: Rigid body and collider tags on Emitter primitives Collision tag on cell Rigid body on cell makes the cell float away It's probably something wrong with my settings but I cannot seem to figure out what!   10. Ok I finally figured it out. The object defining scatter cannot be hidden from scene. Neurons are scattered on the Surface of a Cube. No cube = no clones. Set the material opacity to zero and voila!
  11. Hey all, New C4D user here experimenting with Octane Scatter to duplicate a neuron from our lab. They show up fine in live viewer but are MIA when I actually hit render. Rener only shows octane sky without the neurons. I've been looking for answers on google and trying to diagnose for a couple hours with no luck. The few answers I have found recommended "check render settings" but I'm not sure what exactly I should be checking for. Here is the project file in case it helps. Any help is appreciated! Thanks Amy

  13. HI all, I am a new user of C4D who makes renders of neurons our lab has reconstructed. We reconstruct 3D neural circuits to model information processing in the brain and I want to show activity across these circuits by having individual cells glow. I spent all day trying to do this and pretty much failing. It's probably (hopefully) something basic I'm missing, but here is what I managed before dinner. This is using Emission on an Octane material. It doesn't look right though. There is no ambient/environmental glow (maybe I have to add some dust or something for that to show up) and it doesn't appear to be illuminating neighbors. Here is a link to the project file in case it is helpful. Here is another failed attempt where I changed the Post settings in Octane for Glare etc but it made all the meshes glow and I couldn't figure out how to apply it to just a single material/mesh. I hope this post is in the right category. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this and for any suggestions! Amy
  14. Thank you! @jed I was using the default bitrate in Standard renderer. The models had too many polys so I have ended up downsampling and re-importing so that I can use a GPU renderer. I will try the export with .TIFF next time.
  15. I rendered this animation of neurons overnight at 1920x1080 Unfortunately the frames look awful! here's a frame comparison from the animation vs a png rendered at the same resolution. What went wrong? Is this because I rendered an mp4 rather than png sequence? In case helpful, here are my render settings, set to mp4. We originally tried octane but the meshes are so complex that we ran out of memory. Any help and also constructive criticism is appreciated. Thank you Amy

  17. Hi, I've been trying unsuccessfully for the past hour to import multiple files into one project. The only way I have found is to use Merge, but that is one at a time. It won't let me select multiple files, and when I drag and drop files into the Objects tab (top r) it makes each one into its own window. I'm with a neuroscience lab and our meshes are quite complex - C4D seems to default import them to >1 km long, so I manually decrease the size, also for each mesh. There must be a better way! Trying to get a hundred neurons or so into one window. Any help would be appreciated! Here's a screenshot from an in-browser reconstruction tool of some of the cells we're trying to showcase. This is called the central complex and it comes from a fly brain. Thank you! Amy
  18. Hi there, I'm learning C4D to make animations of neuron meshes from our lab. Unfortunately it has come to my attention that our meshes are utter sh**. Here is a raw mesh. Steps I've tried to improve them: - quadratic decimation in meshlab - smoothing in meshlab - Instant Meshes Any thoughts?
  19. Thanks! Ok we got this running and played around with exports but it is majorly deforming many of the spines. See how they have become hairlike thin tendrils? Some of them are even severed entirely. This mesh is with 10 smoothing steps and it still looks low-poly. When I try to save a smoothed version out of meshlab, the program freezes entirely. here are the mesh files in case you have any other ideas. Instant Mesh Mesh original resolution mesh
  20. Yeah unfortunately exporting .objs is sort of a hack, and a bad one at that. A ruinous mesh of triangles indeed ha. I imported the raw file into Meshlab and used quadratic edge decimation to reduce the face count by ~50% (it's 1.5M on the full model, and this model is about 1/50th of a whole neuron) so that may be contributing to the low density. But yeah generally the meshes are sh**. I will make a separate thread posting a raw .obj and asking if anyone has ideas as to how I could improve it. I'll give the Subdivide and Smooth options a go.   21. Hi there! I'm new to C4D and working on animations for our neuroscience lab. Today am trying to visualize potentiation, the strengthening of synapses (connections between neurons) in the brain. We have reconstructed thousands of neurons at nanoscale resolution from electron microscope images, so the model neuron I am using is a real cell and I'd like to show some of the spines, the projections sticking out, grow and shrink in size. This is only half of the synapse - they would be connected to another branch that also thickens, but I haven't gotten that far yet. I've managed this using Bulge but it deforms the stem pretty badly. Here's the project file where I tried also Subdivision Surface and Squash & Stretch, but neither really worked prob because I'm doing it wrong. Any ideas for a better way to do this? In the brain, these blobby things get larger with use and smaller/eventually shrink away when they are not used, which is how learning is represented.   23. Is this where you adjust it? Is it already on? That render you made looks so nice! The in-view render takes *so long* even at low resolution so I keep turning it off.
